Default brakes mushy to point of dangerous in low RPM

2000 Honda Civic EX Automatic ... brakes last changed at like 72-75000 im at 83500 now.

Yeah, ive had bad luck lately... basically, right now my brakes work at highway speeds well enough, to slow down some, but in city driving or whenever RPM reaches 1000 or so... my brakes pretty much dissappear and from those speeds of about 20mph or so, I get so scared I think I am gonna hit the person in front of me... Any suggestions as to why this is? I havent heard any squeeking. and it seems to work ok until the car gets slower, then its like my brakes turn to sheets of ice... Last time my pads were worn, things were soft all the time, not just slow.

Almost forgot ... It smells like burnt rubber when I am done driving it .. it took like 5 minutes..

You mean it gets really hard to push? or the pedal sinks down.

Might be a brake booster issue, or master cylinder.

Oh the humanity! For ****'s sake, get that **** checked out ASAP at a shop or something. You're not only risking your own life but many other lives out on the road driving around with seriously messed up brakes. The peace of mind is worth the price of paying someone else to fix it if you don't have a clue as to what you're doing (and it appears that is the case here). Hope it doesn't cost you too much but better safe than sorry when it comes to brakes.

When it feels as if the pedal could go to the floor do you try pumping the brakes? Sounds like either, the brakes weren't bled correctly, or, you have a bad brake booster or bad vacuum hose going to the BB. If you pump the brakes and they work fine it means you need to bleed the brakes.
