I have a few questions regarding the zex cams for d16y8. I have been searching and got tons of info on turbo applications for my car. I have saved a couple diy turbo install webpages for the future. In my searching all I seemed to read was what cams for this? are these good cams?...
I am new to turbo so I don't quite fully understand the difference between the street/strip cams and the street cams that zex offers. I have a while until the y8 is turbo, hopefully less then a year, but I have a y7 with a y8 head in my garage. I am going to get it p/p and while at it upgrade cam/spring/retainers for the turbo. I would like to put the y8 head on soon and not have to wait until its turbo time. I plan on it being dd with stock pistons for some time and I know with proper tune 10 psi is achievable.
My next question regards crower cams, The stage 2 turbo for the y8. If I get that instead of the zex cams would it be okay to run it NA until turbo? and can you mix-n-match like zex cams with crower springs/retainers and visa versa?

i love my zex 59300 cam, i had it running NA for awhile and it was awesome, then i went to the dark side and it pulls so hard in the upper rpm. Unfortunetly it will only make power to something like 7800 rpm. The difference between the srett cam (59100) and the street/strip (59300) is the 59300 is much more aggresive. And you can use crower springs and retainers on the zex cam w/o any issues. But what do you plan on revving too? the 59300 cam can be used with stock retainers and springs. I say go with the zex but i am a little biased

 

i have yet to hear one bad thing about the 59300. get the street strip, for the money its bad ***, and much more agressive than the 59100, which i think had about the same profile as the stock d15b cam

 

so where's the best deal for this 59300 cam?

 

have you heard anything about the new zex cams for the 96-00, #105100 and 105300? When I get my y8 head p/p I want them to upgrade the springs/retainers that way later wont have to worry about it, plus I am going to go obd1 and run hondata.

they are not zex cams they are comp cams

yea there havent been to many around, but its the turbo cam, i might get it and see if it makes a differenc...

 

I'd be interested to see if the 59500 makes better power than my 59300 as well.

"You may want to try the ZEX 59500 camshaft sometime. We developed it with my 580whp SOHC and it made an extra 15whp over the 59300 at 27lbs of boost. It also went down the track faster by extending the engine's useful powerband out to 8800rpm. ZEX Man"

anyone else who uses this cam on a stock valvetrain? What kind of increases are we seeing with just the cam on a completely stock z6 or y8 head?

Hopefully I will have one soon. Im going to dyno my setup w/o the cam then redyno with the cam. See what kind of gains I get.

i say 59300, who on the street realistically brings their car to 8800 rpm at 27 psi of boost on a d-series ? Also who on the street has 580 whp? Are you really going to need to overkill? Didnt turboCX make 502WHP on a 59300 with 33 psi?

thats very decent for a 250 dollar cam

pulls great up to the 7495rpm i take my motor

Yea honestly the zex cam made a huge difference in my motor. Top end when to completely dying off with my small turbo to pulling pretty nicely.

 

i agree it hauls *** in the upper rpm from when it was stock, i am putting a little more air flow through my motor though

 

ive convinced myself ill be buying one of these cams for my beater z6 ef hatch, just so i can rip a little more vtec on my way to work at 7am haha

 

So what RPM is the 59300/105300 good to?
