Default Dealership Seatbelt Replacement Question! Do they mind mods?

Hey guys, I'm in a bit of a pickle.
I recently brought my "race" vehicle to college (in Columbus, Oh) with me. It's a 1988 CRX Si with a B18 and 91 Si Seats (among other things). Vehicle is registered, and passed emissions back home. So in other words, all is well so far...

Suddenly, my passenger seat belt mechanism breaks, it won't retract the strap. So this is a big problem because every once in awhile I like to keep a passenger on board.

I hear Honda replaces all of their seat belts if they malfunction and are proven to be defective. Possibly even a recall or something, but I'm worried they are either going to bitch at me for my mods (especially the 91 seats, which technically don't fit in the car) or possibly even hassle me for having a swap although I don't know why they would go under the hood anyway.

So, do you guys think I should take it in? Or just go through the long and painful process on my own?

That was in the warranty booklet that came with our cars..
Note the part about "what is not covered"..

The only problem I can see is if you have altered
the seatbelts from the original configuration..

Edited for clarity...

they will never know that they are 91 seats in a 88 car.
they also won't know anything about you motor, because they have no reason to be under the hood.
you should be fine but worst case senario, you don't get them for free. i would then try the next dealership.

the seat belt configuration is exactly the same. im assuming you are still using the floor mounted buckle with the seatbelt in the pillar. the only thing that might be sketch is the seat brackets are only bolted down with three bolts and if they remove the seats to work on the belts then they might have something to say. if you can get ahold of some 88 seat pans do a seat pan swap or just put that seat in for the time being and then you are good to go. as for engine bay mods thats really not a problem.
good luck

I dont think you would have a problem at all. Besides me here at my dealership noone would ever even know your seats were diffrent. We warrenty everything it sucks cause that means I make less but Honda has a lifetime warrenty on thier seatbelts cause they dedicated to protection

let me tell you something, i work in a honda dealership as a tech, and if the mechanics say anything about your car/swap, it will be good, at least round where i am they will. everybody is cool as hell, and half the guys working there like that kinda stuff.

a guy where i worked had a turboed ZC rex, another worked for a performance shop and had a 600+ HP GSR, i own an 88 rex that, and im building a b18 drop in and turbo.

Believe me, THEY WON'T CARE!!!

i'm a parts Professional, well so honda calls me after the trainign i've done, but yes they will not bitch about mods aslong as you yourself didn't mess with the belt to cause them to mess up, honda is one of th efew Manufacturers that warranties OEM seatbelt for life of the vehicle.

Okay now what if the seatbelts are somewhat functional, but never fully retract and get slammed in the door all the time? Will they replace them then? Anyone know if I can fix it myself? All that stuff is internal and you can't get any grease in there without disassembling. If you disassemble it, it all comes apart plus you probably void the warranty. At least as far as Toyota seat belts go, not sure if Honda is exactly the same.

I would, but they're dicks around here. Anyone know anyone cool that works at Honda in the San Diego area, Chula Vista, El Cajon, or the other one nearby I can't think of right now?

Sometimes the seatbelt loops get some crud on em and dont let the belt slide freely. If that's the case a little soap and water will take care of it.

When I bought my '88 CRX Si, the seatbelt had no life at all. I'd get out the car and the belt would follow. It was disgusting and very embarassing. I guess it matched my fucked up driver's seat. After about 4 months of driving it, I said "**** this ****". I went down to the dealer to get a quote on a new D/S seatbelt. Fortunately that day, the district manager was there and everyone had they're ******** open wider than Buck Tooth Jane from Kung Fu Hustle. Long story short I got a free driver side seatbelt w/ free installation. The guy's reasoning was that seatbelts have a lifetime warranty. That **** saved me like $400 plus installation (yeah those ******* are expensive). I tried getting the passenger side done too but he said it was still tolerance. I might get a new one for that side eventually.

I'd take it into a dealer. What's the worst they can tell you? Get the **** outa here? Putting you no worse off than you are now.

As long as you don't modify the seatbelts they'll replace them. As far as engines, I don't see why they'd go under the hood to replace your seatbelt. I took my CRX in to get the A/C fixed and they didn't say anything about the DOHC ZC or the exhaust/header or the C/F hood. You tell them what to fix and thats what they'll fix. Don't be fooled though some of those guys that work at the dealership know exactly what they're looking at. I've seen the **** they drive.

Maybe they're required to disconeect the battery.
(Note: Just guessing)

same problem on my toyota tacoma, i removed the belt, took it apart, and rewound the spring. better, but still has issues.

take it to the dealer, they have to replace it.

does anyone know if toyota offers the same seatbelt warranty?

what if your car has no door panels, with door mounted seatbelts, will they say i fucked with it? even though the only thing i did to it was pull the belt out of the little slot in the door panel, which has no effect on windup.
