B16a2 into a B16B
i was thinking about going b18c1 but a B16a2 was a second option...can you convert the b16a2 into a b16b? i've heard you would have to replace a lot of parts but will it run like a B16B? sorry if its a dumb question...TIA
The bottom end of the b16b is essentially a destroked b18c. It has the same deck height as the 1.8, only a 1.6 crank and rods. If you were going to switch you would have to buy a 1.8 shorty and essentially waste money going to a 1.6. Either keep the b18c or just buy a b16b shorty.
Yeah I'll agree with waffles on this one. It doesn't really make sense to "make your own B16B" because you're spending money to lose some power and torque. Either keep the B18C or buy a cheap B16A and throw some CTR pistons in it (my setup... higher CR than B16B too). Don't waste your money on the B16B, sure it's unique, but in my opinion it really isn't worth the money.
forget about all that vtec crap.. just get a b20 longblock, put a LS manifold on (cheap from all those who thew their ls heads out to do the lsvtec), grab a decent header/intake/exhaust, and if you have a lil bit more money get the crower 403's with springs and retainers:
b20 long: 800
header: 300
Intake: drop in k/n 50
exhaust: 400
crower 403: 350 shipped from nrg-racing.com
crower spring/retainer kit: 300 shipped
run a ls ecu
grab a tranny that is'nt a LS one..
total: 2200 (the same price for a b16a2 full swap)
With this you should be putting 170 to the wheels and 135tq,
that will be a fun ride, and you wont destroy the engine you just spent money on, cause the block will be OEM still, and you'll only have to rev to about 7300 to make all your power.
Since reving high kills motors, and you dont have to rev high with this motor... soo.. it will last longer and plus you'll have GOBS of troque compared to all other b-series motors, even those with VTEC.

I would definitely say that it is a great platform to start with. A friend of mine has this setup in his eg:
B18C1
Portflow PNP head
ITR cams and valvesprings
Hondata Stage 2
Z10 traction bar
Koni Yellows and GC coilovers
It is pretty quick and a great daily driver. There are many other ways to go with the b18 so it is a great motor to start with.

170HP and 135ft-lb torque to the wheels from just a simple B20Z setup with bolt-ons and cams? I'll believe it when I see it. According to hybrid.honda-perf.org, a basic B20 setup will produce 138HP, 132ft-lb torque with just bolt-ons. I have a VERY hard time believing that you will get 22 more HP with just a cam. Now don't get me wrong. I just swapped a B20Z (no VTEC head) into my Civic HB and I think it is a GREAT motor. FAR better than the B18B it replaces. But while it is a GREAT street motor, it is no quarter mile monster. My B16A CRX does about the same in the quarter mile with a worse 60 foot time and higher trap speed (indicating it could potentially kill my B20Z).
Are these figures of 170HP, 135ft-lb something you have seen personally on your car? If so, let me know.

Okay, I fucked up.. its a b20 with bolt ons, and the 404's instead of the 403's (same price) and with upped compression through pistons.
So its still what I mentioned but with upped compression (11.4ish)

here is my poorman's b16b. still finishing it up but the pistons are in. '00 b16a2
How is that a PB B16B if you're using a B16A block?

Testy testy.
Well, call it what you want, but a PB (poorboy) engine is one that has the exact same parts as the real deal, but only done on a budget. And since the B16B is a destroked B18 block, and you're using a B16 block, I don't see how you are making it.

i am aware of what parts are needed to make a ctr (poorman's). i was unaware of the fact that we had a strict definetion of the meaning "poorman's." thankyou for clearing up what it means, in the future i wont use that term so loosely.

Sorry dude, I'm a stickler for details.
I don't like when stuff is basterdized and battered, when it's not even close to a copy of the real deal.
He could have just said High compression B16 with some CTR parts.
That would be like me saying I got a B20C5, when we all know there is no such thing.
Or someone with a LS/VTEC saying they have a GSR, when they don't.
Sorry for ranting.
Sorry, 1 more thing. The CTR rods are not the same as the B16 rods, they are longer in length.

This is a perfect example as to why people who post in here are lame. Folks like B18C-EJ1 just make me laugh.
I mean your trying to explain Honda motors to Jackson..... HAHAHAHA

Hey I have a true CTR B16B. Nothing like the real deal. I agree with the others above. That would be like saying a I have a B18C1/5 or something like that. The real deal or nothing for me baby. But on the other hand if money is a considerations the poor mans option is always there.
