Draining Tranny fluid on a B18C1.....which oil to use???
i know this sounds like a dumb question, but this weekend I plan on doing some over due maintanance to my car and I want to drain and refil my tranny fluid. I know Honda manual trannies run on motor oil. I was planning to use Royal Purple 5W30 motor oil, is it a good idea?
What would you recommend?

I've had the best luck with Honda MTF. I personally didnt like syncromesh mixed half and half w/ my honda fluid.

hey man, Hondas have some of the best-feeling gearboxes in the world, even on some of their cheapest cars. when Ferrari designed the F50, their target for shifter feel was the Honda NSX. why the hell would you use anything other than Honda MTF? same goes for Honda p/s; it's got a bit of renown to it.

REDLINE MTL its way Better than the honda stuff, I upgraded and noticed much better transmission feel.
HONDA MTL is cheap ! Get the Goodstuff,
Why run standard honda 10w40 when you can run synthetic
Its the same with MTL

Do not, I repeat DO NOT use synthetic motor oil in a transmission, EVER, unless you plan on overhauling the guts of it fairly soon.
Synchronizers in the tranny rely on friction to do their job, and synthetic motor oil is much too slick to function properly. If you use a synthetic fluid, it must have friction additives and modifiers to help with synchronizer functions.
I myself prefer the feel of GM's Synchromesh Friction Modified fluid (NOT the same as Pennzoil's commercially availabel Synchromesh fluid). I run it straight 100%, none of this mixing business. I've been using it well over 60K miles now, and just drained my 2nd fill and put in my 3rd fill of the fluid a couple of months ago. With 213K miles on my original transmission, it still shifts wonderfully, even when it's in the single-digit temps outside in the wintertime.
And I swear there must be about ELEVENTY-BILLION threads on this subject on honda-tech, ya'll need to run a search every once in awhile.

i was sort of joking. just saying if you need synchromesh either your tranny is past due for service or you just plain don't like the sweet snickety feel of the Honda manual transaxle.

its a mint condition 98 LS with 88K driven by a teacher The only reason I like it alot more is because Redline is supposed to be BETTER than the OE stuff and My OE fluid was NASTY

true, KAAZs don't seem to like anything other than KAAZ LSD fluid. really weird how they don't respond well to mobil1 synthetic or redline (RWD apps i'm referring to here, where the diff gets its own fluid). never would have guessed it.

This is only the case for clutch type diffs. right? Im running a jdm itr which is helical i believe........ i hope honda mtf is still right for it. Seems to be doing fine.
