Octane question, Yes ive searched proof inside..
So a girl firend of mine, just bought her self an RSX type-s...she is super happy and evertyhing is cool until i think to my self when we are at the pump...if my 97 lude need to be running on 91 octane...im sure her 2003 S needs to be running it too....so i check out the owners manual, and find that it says... all models except the Type-s can run 87 but the S needs 91...so i tell her and she starts winning about the cost of the gas etc etc and how she will not put 91 since its to expensive...i was like WTF...we argued over this for like a 1/2 hour than i gave up...i know high compression and low octane = ping and therefore isint great for the engine, but considering that she will be seeing Vtec prolly only once a week (she drives slow) i wasent sure if i needed to keep stressin the fact that its dangerous or to really proove to her that she need 91 octane...im doing this for her own good cuz i dont want her to have problem down the line...
anyway so i decided to search but i wanna be sure, i was reading this thread regarding a prelude with this similar question and everyone is saying that its ok bla bla
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1344623
but is it really? anyone have any bad experiences or what can this do in the short/long term life of the engine...i dont even know if K series have knock sensors, which Im pretty sure they have...but im not a K series expert so if anyone could help me out it would be apreciated thanks

i do not know how much i can help you, but i will tell you this;
i put regular gas in my type-s ONCE (in NJ... i told the guy premium, he heard regular)... bad move. the exhaust fumes smelled HORRIBLE (like rotting eggs), pinging all over the place, and a general bad feeling about the car. after the tank was done, premium again, and those symptoms never occured again.
yeah, gas prices are high, but you have to do what's best for the car.

im not 100% sure if this is applicable to the car but i highly doubt that it doesnt.
if a car requires 91 and you put 87, it will cause misfiring and pinging and all that happy crap, the computer will pick this up from the sensors and retard the timing. this will make it so the engine is not being harmed and it runs on 87, however due to the retarded timing you lose power from the engine. this also explains why putting a higher octane isnt always going to make a difference. the car is programmed to notice something wrong and fix it, putting higher octane wont cause the ecu to notice that it can advance the timing so you wont get more power by adding higher octane. youll be paying more money for the same performance just cleaner engine internals far far down the road.

does anybody else feel this way?
i would really like to know

I agree with 02civic86 on this one, you definately wouldnt feel the car mis or ping since the computer would recognize whats going on almost instantly and be able to adjust the timing and fuel accordingly so short term you wouldnt see any real problems but if its recommended you might as well go for the 91, i mean you are probably gona save 3$ everytime you fill up and its just not worth the trouble if something does go wrong down the road.
Dump that girl.
Give me the engine before she wrecks it.
Oh, better yet -- we'll swap. My EP's motor can run 87 octane every tankful (in fact, that's what I usually put in it). If she wants to save gas money so badly, I'll swap my motor for hers -- for FREE.

sounds like another type-s is gonna be dying pretty soon. why buy a "performance orientated" vehicle when she wont be driving it how its meant to be driven.
tell her to read the manual. next thing you know, shes gonna be changing motor oil once a year to preserve money

there's a reasona why a car manufacturere suggests using 91 octane. Since its new, it could void some kind of warranty if the dealer wants to. Tell her its not worth it anyways. Difference between 87 and 91 octane is about what 20 cents? DOnt know max capacity of fuel tank on RSX but on my GTI i have a 14.3 gallon tank. Say i fill up with 13 gallons.
0.20 x 13 = $2.60 a fill up. She's complaining about that? She's gonna wish she listened to you when she has to pay for engine damage that dealer wont cover because she cheaped out.
$2.60 x 52weeks = $135.20 <--- much less than what could happen if she doesnt take care of her engine.

my dealer said i could do half and half, fill all the way up with premium(or whatever the station nearest u calls the highest octane) then when the tank is half full/empty (ur pov) fill it with middle grade
thats just an idea he gave me, but i know it has to be 91 octane at least

doing that would save u like a dollar every time u fill up...heh...it wouldnt even be worth ur time to do that...and with ur girl...why is she gonna spend all that money on a car then go cheap on the gas.

thats what i dont get....i told her thats its like 10 cents more...and that for the problems it will cause down the line she is better to do so...but hey who am i...just another idiot that dosent know anything...**** she is so retarded...lol good thing she dosent speak much english

when an ecu and knock sensor communicate, the ecu cannot always compensate enough, or more critically, fast enough. keep in mind pinging is the sound of the piston slamming back into the wrist and rod and ultimately the crankshaft and bearings. it won't take long for this to take it's toll on the engine. also keep in mind that you won't hear the detonation most often..
if your friend did not want to pay for the extra fuel costs, she should have bought the base model. the computer will store this information and when she does have a critical failure they will be able to see that it was her fault. the amount of timeing the ecu has to pull is robbing the motor of it's power and it's really a waste any way you cut it. if she hardly drives it hard, it is making it even worse. carbon buildup in the cumbustion chamber is further promoting detonation.
she will really lament the repair costs she will have which will be far more than the extra price of premium fuel.

if she wants to screw up her engine and be an ignorant *****, let her be one. show her this thread. the type-s REQUIRES 91 octane. that's like saying a car on 45 pounds of boost wont require methane or c16 fuel.

Ah, I knew a French Canadian girl -- she was cool as hell.
I don't have a girlfriend. Let me ask my right hand if it wants to trade.... um, wait, that sounds BAD....
I'll bet that Google would translate the page, though. Give me a minute to try...

bahaha thats funny...you know what they say about our french canadian girls...and NO to your right hand lol.....heheh oh yea we are ranked #4 in night life here in Montreal...try and guess why lol....anyway...i think i harassed her so much that now she will use 91 octane...thanks guys...it was usefull info...if i get head for this...well...ill get some and you wont haha...
thanks

mmm i dont know if i agree with this. i would say the sound of pinging you actually hear is more of the 2 flame fronts colliding in case of pre-ignition or detonation. if the octane is not a high enough rating it will combust quicker before spark and a flame front can start in one corner then the spark will ignite and they will both rush towards eachother and you hear them meet. otherwise i would say that what your hearing can also be the piston skirt slapping off the wall of the cylinder which is actually what knock is. i would say that a problem with the wrist pin, and below, wouldnt happen unless the computer just didnt respond to the knock sensor, but it all works too fast for this to happen. (for instance as the engine continuously detonated maybe the cylinder would get a hotspot and start igniting more and more btdc and eventually try pushing down the piston in the reverse direction, messing up the connecting rod, but knock is picked up too quickly for this)
