Default Grey/black goo in overflow tank

Hey.

Did a coolant change a month or so ago and now my overflow tank looks like it's got some oil or grey/black goo on the inside of it. It's also some kind of black'ish stuff covering the coolant in the tank. The inside of the radiator cap is a bit grey. The coolant itself is keeping it's more or less clear blue color.

I'm not having power loss or cooling problems. The engine is a d16y7 that has rounded 160.000km and burns a bit oil (bad rings i think)...

Know what it is?

Well that sucks.

Why would the headgasket go on a stock engine just like that?

Have i driven it too hard?

Been there, done that. I had the same exact problem. I had a friend do "leak down test" that verified my head gasket had to be replaced.

Yes, your overflow has oil junk along the walls. When my engine was very hot, I noticed that as soon as I turned off the car, the overflow would emit bubbles. Not evident, but slight. Turned out the cause of it all was a faulty water pump. I could see from under the car that the water pump weep hole was excreting fluid.

I have a civic 96 ex with 80k miles. I bought it used, at a great price.

By, the way, if you have the head gasket replaced, do it yourself. It is rather fun. It is important to mill the heads for safe measure that the head is not warp. I have read here on the forum people cutting corners with not milling the head to pay for it in the long run. At the same time there are tons you can replace like the water pump, timing belt, cam and crankshaft seals...etc. I did a whole writeup when I did mine. Let me know if you want it. OH, I replaced the radiator at the same time. Good luck.

Most likely the head gasket... like already stated...

When I first blew my head gasket in my boosted z6 it looked like my overflow tank was filled with a chocolate milkshake! Mmmmm!!

When oil and coolant mix it comes out looking all sludgy like that. Your head gasket doesn't sound too bad though, probably a small leak.

Hmm, that's exactly what my overflow looks like right now. Maybe I'll try to get a new water pump and head gasket.

aerielb1, do you think you could send me a link to your writeup?

Thanks for all the good info.

Yes, would like your how-to, please.

And i think i will just try to find a new engine with lower milage and try to build a mild streetable NA car. My current engine (y7) has bad rings and 160k km on it...

Are there COMPLETE rebuild kits available out there? I'm about to pickup a d16z6 with blown HG and want to fully rebuild, and do a moderate all motor build on it.

Do not know. I guess you will just have to get your hands on the different parts from different scources. Or do a full internal rebiald with OEM parts.

I think i will look for a b18b1 and swap in with a b16 tranny and then some head transplant over time.

Thanks for all the help though. y7 sucks.
