i don't know if this is the right forum or not but i'll ask anyway. if the axle nut has been cross threaded, which part is actually messed up. the threads on the axle nut or the threads on the axle or both? just wondering so i can have the parts i need before i cut the thing off. thanks

Can you tell from the inside of the nut if it's damaged or not?

 

You wont know until you cut the nut off. Unless the end of the axle is noticeably fubar'd.

 

GET a really strong impact on take it off, you will then be able to tell if you want to rethread which is not worth the time and be a lot easier to replace it

 

How the hell did that happen? I would just a really strong impact to rip it off then diagnose the probelm from there. If the nut itself is messed up, that's only a few bucks from the auto store. If it's the axle, just get it rebuilt.

 

I personally would cut it off, trying not to mess it up more.

 

Seeing as there is a thread on driveshafts,

If you hold the drivers side shaft, should there be a little bit of play between the hub and the inner shaft. Ie, you can push it or pull it a couple of mm's? it seems locked in and I can't pull it out, but just wondering, thanks

Are you trying to pull the tree out of the boot? It wont. If not I dont understand what your talking about.

 

No, not trying to do that, it just seems like there is somefree play between the hub boot and the trans. end boot, like you can hold it, and slide it in and out slightly

 

Get a strong impact gun using an IMPACT socket. There is a HUGE difference from an impact socket compared to a chromoly socket.

Second, pull the axle out and have it rethreaded. This can be done and I personally have done it myself. If you cannot find anybody to rethread the axle, have it replaced. Get a new nut as well.

I've just been hanging around. Talk to Chris lately? I'm finally buying a house, though. It's kind of hard to tell what's messed up. I tried taking the nut off, but was only able to loosen it about 3 turns. I guess I'll just try cutting it off, I don't have access to air tools.

 

I had this happen to me, trying to rush things. I ended up grinding out 3 rows of thread on the axle and I bought a new nut. The nut on the end is not absolutely becessary but the axle can and will slide side to side a lot with out it (I drove without it for a few days, not recomended)

I think that would be asking to tear things up.
