New Owner Quick Question
I've never owned a Honda before and it already sounds like my previous car
(95 Talon Tsi Awd) with all the lifter ticking going on. Just wondering if this is normal or not because I heard that this is a normal sound with all hondas or do these lifters suck.?Thanks

Do you have an idea of how often the oil was changed in that car before you bought it? How consistant the maintenance was done? Honda engines are reliable as hell and can take a beating, but like any motor, with parts that wear out or break, if you dont treat it right...its gonna let you know.
I bought the car from the original owner with 57,*** miles. This was posted in his for sale ad ..... 2002 Honda S2000
* Sebring Silver exterior w/black interior.
* 1 owner purchased new from Antrim Way Honda
* 57k miles - most are mainly light, rural driving or highway cruising (in other words: very little stop-and-go city driving, ZERO clutch dumps, NEVER tracked (drag, autox, road course, etc.), and NEVER over-revved.
* Car has been babied from day one and maintenanced with only the highest quality fluids:
*Mobil 1 synthetic oil every 3000 to 3500 miles (with the exception of
Royal Purple for ~2000 miles one time.)
* GM Syncromesh tranny fluid two times
* Mobil 1 synthetic rear diff fluid two times

I would question such "babying" to the car if it has valve noise...that usually says that the car was probobly taken care of, but certainly not babied. Not at 57,000 anyways.
Im curious why he had already had 2 tranny and differential flush and fills by 57,000 miles. I dont think thats normal...

I was thinking the same thing. They don't do the first flush til 60 or 75k right?

correct me if im wrong , but i havent heard flushing manual trans ... maybe auto trans i have ... in my car i just drain it
I just said flushing it because that was the first word that came to mind when i thought about having tranny fluid changed...i know that its usually associated with auto trannys, but i was just saying...(for clarities sake)...it seems weird the tranny and differential fluid had been changed twice already. (just forget the word flush)
I changed my tranny fluid when i bought my car since it was used and had 69k on the clock. I also plan on changing it out more frequently than suggested by Honda since i do a lot of "spirited" driving. Maybe he felt the same way...
I've got three Hondas now and that sound is not normal: S2000, Accord, CB650se nighthawk. The oil in the S2000 is redline and the others are havoline 5W-30 and 20W-50 respectivily. I've always found that you use the same consistantly with a vehicle is helpfull.

I wouldn't question that, in fact, i'd be glad he did change the fluids that often.
A number of ITR owners change tranny fluid every 6,000 miles. It doesn't mean it's been beat on.
If I cared enough about my car I'd change the tranny fluid more also, 30k per change here currently.
As for the OP, I'd check the valves. Most likely he never had them adjusted.

as a former employee from antrim way honda i can prolly tell you that the car was well taken care of and most deffenatly beat on by the mechanics there. they are a very nice dealership but the employees are something else
I used to change the tranny fluid in my Civic every 10k miles, but then again, I had a ITR swap in there and did a lot of spirited driving. I'll probably change the tranny fluid on my S2K every 15k or so, or every few months. I pretty much change my oil everytime I get to go home and see my family, which is once a month.
For the OP, I am inclined to agree, the valves probably just need adjustment, especiallly if the original owner did do a lot of spirited driving. Changing fluids is relatively easy, so I can understand why it got changed twice in less than 60k, but valve adjustments tend to take more time and require more specialized tools, so he probably avoided it.
Good luck

Well lifter tick for pretty much any VTEC engine is normal. The VTEC rockers are not operational during idle and other normal conditions. So they flap up and down. I know there's a lost motion assembly and all that, but they still make noise. It's normal.
The fuel injectors also tick. Excessive tick might mean that the valves need to be adjusted. The shop around here charges around $80ish for S2000 valve adjustments. So...go spend the $80 and see if it makes it quieter.
Ticking can also be a bad Timing chain tensioner. I've heard that these take about 5 mins to replace. They cost around $150??
But all in all, the engine is inherently noisy. No big deal.

I change my trans and diff oil every 10-15K depending on how many track events I run that season. I don't believe in over maintaining stuff, but I do notice that the trans shifts MUCH nicer with the new fluid. For some reason, the S2000's trans "chews up" MTF. People on S2Ki say the same thing. The trans feels like butter for the first 2-5k after a flush, then it gets notchy again. Not really a huge deal, though.
I change fluids based on abuse in the S2000. I track it as often as possible...and I only really put on about 5-6k miles per year. So buying $15 worth of fluids every 2 years is not a big deal for me.
WTF, I just realized how old this thread is.
get the mobil 1 crap out of the motor. many reports of excessive valvetrain noise from that oil (do your research on s2ki). previous owner ran it in my car also. other then valvetrain, could also be timing chain tensioner like someone mentioned.
hi everybody just bought an 02 s2000 f20c ap1 motor felt kinda weird wondering if anyone else has this issue i think my vtec is off or something or maybe someone knows how to help me fix this problem i start off in 1st gear and push the rpms to around 6500 and bur bur bur it starts to bog out really hard just trying to find some help if anyone has had this occur to them or knows someone please help a fellow s2k owner out in trying to fix it
thanks

^ You probably want to start another thread. you probably also want to make your posts easier to read by adding punctuation.
Is your car fully warmed up, now many miles is on the car?(worn spark plugs can affect and drivability in general), what octane rating fuel do you have in the fuel tank?
