Nationals day 1 results. Some interesting things going on....
http://sccaforums.com/forums/16/ShowForum.aspx
Lee Piccone finally laying the smack down on those C4s in BSP.
Ian Stewart leading SS in a GT3, over the Doctor himself, no less.
Andy Hollis leading STS (Go Andy, you're long overdue!), and a protest too (something about a cat not in the right spot?)
Andy McKee leading SM2 (was there any doubt about that?), but our very own jzr is holding down 3rd, right behind his car owner Gary Thomason.
Carl, who really wishes he was running, this being the last year on Topeka concrete....
EDIT: wow I can't spell

H-T member Ryan Thompson is only 0.266 off 1st place in STS, but because the competition is so insanely tight, he's in 8th place. The protest is regarding a header, or more specifically the movement of the location of the catback exhaust (which apparently is illegal) required to fit the header. This is 2nd hand info and I also won't pretend to know the rules in STS to say anything further. There was also some unfortunate events taking place such as a 2.5 hour rain (lightening) delay and the pavement breaking up resulting in a slight course redesign. Sounds like it was quite a hectic day out there and looking at how spread out the times were from 1st to 3rd runs in some of those classes, it will be interesting to hear who got affected by the rain. And way to go Ian Stewart putting that GT3 in front of all the Vettes! I've seen that beautiful car a couple of times this year and it sounds as sweet as it is fast.
Apparently the protest was a due to the relocation of the cat and a non OEM cat. The HI-TECH header used in the application pushed the cat back approximately 9" and the cat was not the same dimensions as the OEM according to Andy. There is a discussion on this in STS board of the SCCAForums.com site.

Yeah, the first 9 positions in STS are on the same second. STS has given some of the closest and most intense battles, it's great!
And way to go Michael Occipinti(spelling?) putting a neon in 4th in the class!
EDIT: wow, those new pain killers the doc gave me yesterday made me really loopy lol what?

I wonder how much the wet pavement has to do with these results...
Dangit, it's been years ('02) since we had a dry natz. What a pain! IMO if they moved the dates about 2 weeks earlier, chances of a dry event would be greatly increased. Sure, it'd be about 8 degrees hotter, but I'll take heat over rain any day. I'm sure there are good reasons for running the dates they do, but I don't know what they are.

Lee nearly maxed out his BMW this year 3.2 engine, M3 light weight aluminum doors, fender flares (well that was last season), etc. But you know what I mean. So, I would say that he has a chance no matter what. Even though I have heard that Rita came back to win BSP.

Looks like the rain was good to the CRXs. Wonder why there's a Mini in there?

I always figured someone could kick *** in a Neon if they really built a good one.
Torque is your friend, and the brakes on that car just 0wn. ACRs are well geared for autocross as well. 2nd gear all the way on most courses.
Way to go Ryan... His first time in that car too.

If you look at the times those are only for yesterday. Look at STS final times versus STS2. STS overall times are about double STS2's. The second day has not been incorporated. CRX's aren't 60 seconds faster.

unfortunatly, will kalman (tuesdays leader that was protested) was co-driving someone elses car that he was not very familiar with... in any case, i doubt that moving the cat 9" would allow him to beat the rest of the crowd by over a full second (which he did on tuesday)! as i understand it, he was allowed (after the cat was fixed) to run today (wednesday) and he was still faster than the rest by .1 seconds.
it's really too bad because will is a great guy and an awesome driver... i'm sure will had no idea that the car had any illegal modifications. i also know the car owner and it's had to believe that he knew as well, although it can be said he should have. just a bad situation all around.
congratulations to ken, kevin and andy!

Indeed Will did a fabulous job. Kudos on a great drive.
And no one involved that I know of believes that there was any malice intended by any of the drivers or the car owner. But it always get dicey when you are paying someone else to build your car for you because they may or may not have the required knowledge of how our rules work. They also may or may not be wanting to "help" you in certain ways. This is especially true of road racing prep shops where pushing the rules is a way of life. This is why I do all of my own work and why I am *very* specific when I send anything out for machining. And I check everything that comes back.
But I've also been on the other side of this exact same situation when I was young in the sport and naive, and I know how it feels to get protested and be found illegal at Nats. The best one can do is to learn from it and use it as motivation to do better next time.
A level playing field is all that anyone wants so that great drives can be recognized and rewarded fairly.
