I am thinking about getting an IPOD, and i know the stereo in my EX SE can play MP3's, and has a plug in the front, which i heard can be used to plug MP3 players into. Anyone done this, and if so, what do i need to plug the IPOD in? every IPOD kit i see only has hookups thru the radio or the tape deck. let me know if anyone has any experience or suggestions...

 

is it an input plug? if it's an output plug, it will be useless. if it's an input, it should work. you need the mini-mini plug. the headphone plugs basically, but you need males on both ends. plug one end into the ipod and one end into the headunit.

 

ok, you have to help me out here, what is an input plug and an output plug?

look in your owner's manual to see if the player has input plugs on it (should be specifications of the stereo in it)

 

i just bought this unit with the security card (legit) but i didn't have the chance to install it in my eg cause someone stole my car...

i know its a 6 disc indash mp3 player with an input to plug an external source as an mp3 player... ipod... mini disc...

only thing i don't know is the power of the unit...

and also I paid 300$ for it... did i got ripped off?

 

It should be an input -- I've never heard of having an output plug on the front of the head unit.

You can use a minijack-to-minijack cable from the iPod's headphone jack to the head unit -- but you'll get better sound if you also use something like the Belkin auto charger, which uses the iPod's dock connector for line-level audio output.

That's just the battery, which wears out like every other rechargeable battery in existence, and then you replace it.

Other players have more features, better battery life, etc etc...

What it comes down to is how well it works with its software on the computer. Nobody else has yet reached the integration that the iPod/iTunes combo has had. Every time there's a review about the iPod written by some technophobe columnist, they say the same things -- "Oh my God, this is so easy! Even I figured it out in five minutes -- brilliant!"

The iPod didn't become popular on style alone; it became popular by word-of-mouth. Somebody gets one, hangs onto it for a while, and when their friends start asking about it, they almost always have positive things to say. And, it's stayed popular because it works so well -- not because of the largest legitimate online music store, not because of the pretty colors, but because of how well it does what it's supposed to do.

 

makes sense. I have a friend who has a Rio, and she cant wait to upgrade to an ipod, she says the difference in sound quality is amazing. I know there are others with more options, but i havent heard any of my friends who have ipods say anything bad. thanks!

best bang for the buck though IMO, is an iriver. ipods are seriously overpriced for what you get (lacks some audio format support, like wma).

then again, i'm not a fan of laptop-based audio players altogether, long live the flash memory!

 

iTunes will convert WMA files, but not the ones that you'd buy from other online music stores. Those are DRM-protected files and can't be altered in any way.

If you're got tons of unprotected, non-DRM WMA files already (say, files that you've downloaded through filesharing or music you've ripped from your own CD's), you can still import them into iTunes, and from there you can put them onto the iPod.

 

Sound quality is only as good as the files you put on there, too. If you want 100% CD-quality sound, you can import it as an AIFF or WAV file -- those formats are bit-for-bit copies of the original data, but they're just as big, too; 600-ish MB for a single CD. iTunes also can use a format called Apple Lossless, which ends up with files about half as big but sound quality that's nearly indistinguishable from the CD itself.

The Dolby-developed AAC (Advanced Audio Codec) that Apple uses sounds better than an mp3 file of the same bitrate -- that is, a 128 kbps AAC file sounds nicer than a 128 kbps mp3 file. To my ears, the quality of an AAC file is roughly equivalent to the next level higher in mp3 terms -- 128 AAC sounds like an mp3 encoded at 160 kbps, etc.

Oh yeah -- regarding what I said above about DRM-protected WMA files, you could still burn them into an audio CD (assuming that their license allows it) and re-import them into iTunes.

Yea, welcome to 2001 when that was true about the 1st gen ipods I think we are on like the 10th gen, or have completly moved away from "gen."

iPods arent popular just because they look cool. The are put together really well, they have what you need and leave off the junk you dont, and they work! I have never had a problem with my mini ipod. Why would apple allow WMA's onto an iPod? I doubt an iriver allows you to put itunes bought music onto it. You can always convert it within seconds anyway!

yes, it's all about convience though, a good number of files that i get are WMAs and OGGs, both which are not supported by ipod which really sucks but i could care less.

i don't buy music, and even if i wanted to i wouldn't get it over itunes either.

i stand by the iriver, but this thread isn't about that...

Again, iTunes converts WMA files that don't have digital rights management copy protection.

Plus, there are plugins and other tools to convert Ogg files to formats that are useable by iTunes.

 

I have mine hooked up with the http://www.mp3yourcar.com adapter and it works flawless. If you end up getting an iPod I would look into getting one...

 

I dont need an adaptor like that, i have an auxilliary plug in the front of my stereo

 

I like having the auxiliary input in the back, actually. That lets me route a patch cable to someplace else in the cabin, and I won't be left with wires hanging off of the radio face.
