with k-series motors (k20, k24, etc) the i-vtec engagement is harder to discern. reason being, the engagement is smooth and gradual.

on the other hand, vtec (without the i) is fairly easily discernable. the vtec engagement is sudden so the pitch in sound changes immediately.

I wouldnt even say that. On my gsr when it was stock and modified I couldnt hear much at ~ 4400RPM. What was easy to hear was the secondaries at ~5700 RPM

the beauty that is vtec is distinctly recognized as sounding as if you were downshifting while in gear. it is a much louder shift in exhaust sound when it engages. get some better breathers intake/headers/exhaust and youll really hear it scream. and yes it kicks in in mid band.

No, a SOHC vtec and DOHC vtec arent in the same league. While a SOHC vtec has marginal gains, DOHC Vtec gains are a lot stronger and a lot more noticeable. SOHC vtec is for people who like gas milage.

i used to have a 99 Si and when the VTEC kicked in everyone knew it, it screamed...I was thinking about getting a 02-05 SI or 02-04 RSX but honestly I think I'm going to see if I can find an unmodified 99-00 SI/GSR at a reasonable price...K series are awesome but with the B series you get the Power and the Sound

If it's the "traditional" high-cam VTEC, you'll hear it -- it's like, "nnnnnnnn-aaaaaaa" when you run it up. The faster K-series motors do it, too.

No discernable change in pitch at switchover - modified or otherwise.

Variable Valve timing and Electronis control Lift - VTEC

on the Type S it is not really audible but you should feel it Engage at around 6000rpm. Not to sure about the base model or SI.

base model and SI engages vtec at around 2300 or something for fuel economy. You can deffinitely hear it in a type s with an intake.

So in other words, the sohc vtec sucks? how would the vtec compare on a d17a2 to the d17a1 without the vtec?

I don't think that was his intention at all. It isn't a bad question at all IMO. I'd give him the benefit of the doubt, but especially with your comments you'll look like a jerk if you're wrong.

Well, that really depends...if you want a neck snapping, 9000 rpm screamer then yes, the SOHC vtec engines suck - go buy an S2000. However, if you want something that makes reasonable power, gets good mileage, and has a remarkably tractable powerband given it's size (in other words, what it was DESIGNED to do), then they don't suck at all.

Comparing A1 and A2 - nearly the same - much closer than say the K20 A2 and A3 in terms of charachter. Anyways, the A1s are going into lighter cars (no sunroofs, etc.) so head to head they would probably be nearly identical.
