Default Crx swap opinions-please

I just bought a 91 crx dx 5-speed with 185,000 miles on it. The motor smokes real bad and uses lots of oil.
I have never done a motor swap and don't know anything about them, but I have been doing some research. I know that I want to build it for reliability and keep my A/C. I don't want to swap out the mounts and all that stuff. So, I am pretty sure that I need to stick with a d-series motor.

Any suggestions?

I am pretty sure I want to do either a jdm D15B sohc or a jdm D15B sohc vtec.

Goals: Reliable, fun to drive crx with more power than stock. Not raced.

This is swaping from a crx dx.
So, I'm not sure exactly what parts, wiring, etc. I will need to get this job done. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I think I am going to buy either a d15b vtec from H-motors-O or buy a d16z6.
What is the preference?

ZC is a fast and easy swap with more power than a sohc can give with out a bunch of work...... my zc i bought over a year ago got dyno'd in at 152 hp.... i dont know if some little guy in japan built this motor up or what but that is well worth my $600 or so.... any way just my $.02

yull have to convert to MPFI, and you may want to get an Si or zc tranny, just do a little searching and you will find tons of info

I'd go with the ZC. Wiring vtec isn't easy, and I am glad I didnt have to do something like that on my first swap.

I was just going to use my dx intake manifold and ecu, for now. Then when I figure out how to do all this wiring and converting etc. I will do it.
I am just doing research and getting suggestions now. I know that I want to do the swap and wiring and all the the correct way.
$660 for the d15b vtec shipped to my house

Order the ECU at the same time, or at least inquire, because I never got one from Hmotors as they were backordered 2 months.

you would only have to run the 2 extra wires for the other two injectors, and just extend 2 other wires from the plug on the distribtor to the new cam pos sensor on a zc swap adn you are done!....

i would suggest a swapping in a D16z6...you wont be dissapointed. They can be attained fairly easy here locally and they put out decent HP for a single cam. You have to convert to MPFI anyways so why not just swap in a 1.6? You can run it with a PM6 ecu (civic/crx si) and wire vtec to an MSD rpm switch. Axles, mounts and tranny all bolt right up from your current setup. Later on if you decide to convert to obd1, youll see even better performance gains.I had a z6 in my hatch before my b16 swap and i loved to drive the hell out of it

I was looking at the jdm d15b because they should all have less than like 50k on the motor.

thats what they claim anyways...but theres no way to tell for sure exactly what the mileage on an imported motor is. ultimately it's your call, but I would find myself a rebuilt z6/y8 or if your're mechanically inlined...rebuild one yourself
from what i hear, JDM motors are tougher to smog as upposed to a USDM motor. Dont know for sure if there's any truth to that though. Good luck and have fun with it

Yeah I am not to mechanically inclined. But I do plan on messing around with the dx motor to learn more about engines and such.
I don't need to worry about smog here in Kansas, at least not yet.

I think I am leaning towards:
d15b vtec from Hmotors
p08 from Hmotors
Wiring....? Hmm I guess I could send the dx wiring harness and d15b vtec wiring harness to Rywire.

I did a whole b18a swap for $500 they are cheap and easy to find. I bought a totalled teg for 250 pulled everything i needed and sold everything else. I actually made money off my swap. B series isnt as expensive as everyone makes it out to be. with mounts and linkage its pretty much a bolt in affair that takes no more than a day or 2.

Plus no vtec to wire just mpfi and your set.

the d15b vtec engine is a nice engine to swap in, because all of the replacement parts are available in the US. It is basically a 92-95 civic vx bottom end, with a 92-95 civic si(d16z6) head. this means it has a very light rotating assembly, which just loves to rev, with a head that can flow enough air to make it worth reving it.

As far as intake manifolds go, dont bother doing the swap if you arent going to replace the intake manifold. If you are going to use the p08 ecu, you should probably get a z6 intake manifold. you can also use a pm6 ecu out of a 88-91 si, with the 88-91 si manifold, but you would need to come up with a way to turn the vtec on. I would suggest the z6 manifold, because the port sizes will actually match up. You will also need a 92-95 distributor, 4 wire oxygen sensor, and the obd1 fuel injectors. Then you just get a obd0 to obd1 conversion harness, with the dx to si additional harness, and it should have instructions on how to wire up the whole thing.

Hmotors says the motor comes with the manifolds, so I should be good there.
They do offer the 5-speed hydro trans.
Does anyone recommend the hydro trans for $150??

No, dont do the trans. You would need a conversion kit to make it work in your car, which would just end up costing you more, for negligable gains.

resurface the flywheel if you're putting a new clutch on it

i was in your same situation... i went with a d16z6($400 with a 30 day warranty), rywire harness($300), kept the dx tranny because i plan on turboing soon, and got a p28($80 shipped off ebay)... all in all i am very pleased with the setup and would recommend it to anyone for their first swap... you can use all your stock mounts and the axles, etc... i like it because its different that what everyone else has around here and i just barely beat my buddy who has a dohc ZC swap... he spent more money on his setup too!

SAVE THE SOHC!!!!!!!
