Default 86 civic thermoswitch??

hey i was wondering if u guys could give me ne info on how this thing works, or how u know if its goin bad?? my buddy has an 86 civic for a beater, and were tryin to figure out y it runs kind of hot....it doesnt overheat, but it just runs hotter than it should....i know the thermoswitch is supposed to make the car run cooler, so i was takin that into consideration.....ive already bled the system, and also changed the cap.....the thermostat opens and closes fine...the only other thing i can think of is it could be a few bad spots in the radiator itself....but i figured the switch made perfect sense since its not overheating but it is runnin a little hot....hit me up with ideas.....
