Default My WCHC Willow Springs Weekend Report!!! 56K no way...

WOW, what a weekend! Some of the best racing I have seen, and most certainly the best I have had the pleasure to be a part of.

Saturday started out pretty well. Went out for practice and worked on getting the car set up. Went pretty well. Qualifying came up, and all went well. Qualified 3rd, and was very happy with that. Time for the race.
Started on the inside or T1 behind Steve. Got a good start and was able to get by Steve into T1 while being pushed right down to the inside (thanks for leaving me some room Steve ) . Thawley obviously got a good start with that B16 and drove right on by on the outside of T1. Wow is that car loud.
Going into 3 behind Thawley, Steve was able to re-pass me. Exiting 4, Thawley was nice enough to let both of us by to try and chase down Edik! We then worked together a bit to catch back up. Once Steve had caught Edik, and they started fighting for the lead, it made it very easy for me to catch both of them quickly. From that point on, it was one hell of a race! There were so many lead changes and exciting moments. Steve and Edik got slowed a bit coming out of 9 by lap traffic, and I was able to get a great run on both of them. Drafting down the straight, I was able to pull out and pass both of them into 1. WOW, I was leading my first race! It was GREAT!!! I led until I caught a much slower H4 car coming down into 5. Unfortunately, this guy did not understand that he should be on one side or the other and stayed in the middle of the track through 6. This really killed my speed down the back straight and gave enough time to Steve and Edik to catch me rather easily. Down the back, Steve went to the outside, and I went inside of 8. We were side by side all the way into 9 were I got VERY sideways braking late. Made the save, and had a few more fun times through 9 during the race. They were both able to get by and I was demoted to 3rd! From then on, my fronts started to go away and I was unable to keep the pace of Edik and Steve. They pulled away a bit and I settled on a very happy 3rd place with such a fun race!

Sunday went well also. Practice, only went out for a few laps to make sure the car was good. Qualifying was ok. Never really got a clean lap, and qualified 4th. Was fine with that and happy to start the race!
Race time came, and everyone got a good start. Sam had qualified 3rd and was on the inside going into T1. I was following Steve on the outside and he stayed on the throttle a bit longer which allowed me to get by Sam. Next time into T1, Edik and Steve went in door to door. Edik and Steve had the same speed, but Edik's driver side wheels touched the curb which sent the car up the turn into Steve. Steve made a great recovery, and I was able to sqeek by him. Followed Edik through T2 and into T3, Steve was going around the outside of me. Made the pass up the hill into 4, and proceeded to to fight with Edik for a few laps. Edik started to draw away, and I began to very slowly catch Steve. Steve got held up a bit going into T1 which let me close up enough to bother him. Coming out of T5, Steve went wide and off the track, but like the crazy man he is stayed in it and hopped the curb over T6 and back on track. Thanks for missing me Steve! I was able to get by and thought I had my first second place finish. I was able to keep the gap stable between Steve and I until I caught the same slow H4 car in the SAME spot. Killed my speed out of T5 and did go by on the outside of T6. That gave Steve enough speed down the back straight to make a pass down the inside into T9. I thought of staying to the inside of T9, but after trying that a few times during sats race and almost loosing it, I thought I should play it safe and see if I could get him back. Get a good drive out of the turn because I have the wider line. Draft Steve down the straight, and pull out at the last second to dive down for the inside of T1. Can't make the pass stick, and Steve hold his speed on the outside. Follow him around for another lap and get a good drive out of T9 again. Draft all the way down to T1, and pull out for the pass. This time, I brake a bit later, get sideways, and hold the turn. We exit side by side, but some how I have a bit more speed out of the turn. Pull a little bit and enter T2 side by side. I don't want to close the door on Steve, he gains ground on the inside. We come out side by side once again. We enter T3 door to door again, and proceed to go through T3, T4, and T5 side by side. Finally exiting T5, Steve has the room to get on the power and goes on by through T6. I get a good tow from him down the back straight, and think about a pass through 9. Steve takes a tighter line into T9, and I enter a bit to hot. On exit, go 4 wheels off, keep it going straight, and right back on track to take my happy 3rd place! Wow, what a second race!!!

What a great weekend I tell ya. I'm sorry if all this sounds a bit confusing. Just trying to go over what I remember before I forget.

I want to give a big THANKS to my crew and sponsors for helping me to get out there!
Alaniz Power : A-Spec-Racing : KW Suspensions : Redlinetrackevents
Suspension was awesome, and the motor was killer!

NASA put on a GREAT event , and I don't think I could have asked for more from the weekend!

Right now, I am just where I want to be at this point in my HC start. Running up near the front is really all I can ask for and I am so happy to be there. I will keep trying to find some more speed from myself and the car so I can stay at the front next time!

Here are some pics from the weekend and I will post vid later!
Stealing some of the images from Edo's site because his brother takes such damn good pictures!

Working with Edik to catch Steve on Sat!

Someone making a pass, but I can't remember who because there was so much passing!

Sunday's white flag lap and finish!

Leading!!!

Steve and I! Last lap battle...

Podium!

Vids!?! I learned Infineon vicariously through BrianZ and Andrie's vids. Can you help a brotha out and upload some WS vids for me? Just in case we want to come out sometime next year and get embarassed by the SoCal H4 crew.

EDIT: Just re-read your post... vids were promised up there. I'll be more patient next time...

Your posted email still doesn't work. I'd like to talk to you about getting a CD of your Infineon videos... Please email me.

Yes, except for Marty Rauch who was at Infineon. He suffered some major damage to his car, which might be why he didn't attend the WSIR event.
