Default Helmet - Inexpensive but high quality?

I'm looking to buy an inexpensive but high quality (boy am I gonna get reemed for this one) helmet to get for a chick friend of mine. What's good? I don't wanna spend like $500 because she's not worth it. lol. No, because I know there's helmets out there for a lot less that'll perform well incase **** happens.

Btw, DOT or SNELL? I remember there was this huge test they did on one of the rags basically proving that DOT is better for 90% of the less severe accidents and that SNELL is better for 10% of the more severe accidents. So, SNELL is worse than DOT on those 90% scenarios?

About 3 months ago, either Sport Rider or 2 wheel tuner did a comparo. I can't remember the mag to be exact but the best cheap helmet out there is Z1R and they subjected them to varied impacts, slides, abuse of all sorts and a 100 dollar Z1R was right there with Shoei and Arai. I personally ride in Shoei's but if I were not concerned with comfort and wind noise, I would rock a Z1R becuase of how well it did. I know the article had a big impact on a lot as well because Suomy and Arai pulled ad space from the mag for what they said but hey, an honest review was a good thing in my book.

My girlfriend rocks a black HJC CL-14 helmet that I bought for her for a little over $100.

The helmet is a very safe helmet, but for all the more she wears it, it's not worth the lessened fatigue and extra comfort I gain from my Arai.

The purchase of my Arai had nothing to do with the difference in impact tests of a $500 helmet vs. a $150 helmet, most out there do very well, and was more to do with the weight, comfort, quality of components (vents, shield, hinges, padding, and finish), and ease of use.

alot of helmets now are both DOT and SNELL and you can get basic HJC or something in there for couple hundred bucks...

if your just looking for a cheap extra helmet...heh...

but chances are sence shes a girl shes gonna want a $1000 arai or shoei with some preatty design on it , good luck getting her to wear a basic color helmet.

Can a non-snell /bsi lid protect you just as well as a certified one? Yes. But its not tested. All helmets must be DOT to be legal but the kick is there is no DOT testing, its basically on the honor system of manufacturers that their lids will pass the minimum testing for DOT certification. IMHO, BSI is one of the highest testing. They do their in house testing for helmets sent from the manufacturer and also go out and buy lids from stores and test those.
As for a great lid with low cost, check out HJC's CL-12. Pretty comfy lid and low cost.

KBC. Inexpensive, but they hold up well.

I was also very suprised when i learned Mladin wears a KBC.

ANYWAYS .. i think my helmet was $150. Just a regular glossy black DOT/SNELL full face helmet. In my accident, i locked up the front brake and endo'd into the side of a pickup truck at 35mph, and because of the endo i literally hit head first leaving a huge dent.

I had a SERIOUS closed head injury (major concussion).. i barely remember most the accident and when i got to the hospital i asked they same question every 5 minutes, because i had forgot i already asked and knew the question.

I may have made it sound like my helmet sucked .. but look at the damage my head did to the truck, and realize i'm still here to tell my story, then you'd know it did it's job and then some.

KBC and i did my own crash test to prove it. The helmet isn't even cracked, just scratches all over it.

according to the test the z1r is the winner..

in least amount of g's transmitted to the head (from a flat impact)

but then the snell foundation says that only a low percentage of collisions are with flat surfaces so they say this test is no good..

the debate rages on

Most people on a tight budget get HJC or KBC.

I bought a couple of Scorpion exo 400s for my girl and myself and we both are very please with them. I would recommend them.

Scorpion or KBC, I rock one, friend has the other, we both love them. Both are DOT/Snell.

Paul, you are still missing the point, the cheaper helmets hold up just as well if not better than the arai or shoei, I pay for the bells and whistles on mine because I like the designs. Other than that, buying it for girl who will ride once a month with you or something (I hate taking girls with me) is just buying into hype.

another vote for scorpion exo 400 here. good price, great fit, removable/washable liners and anti fog visor.

I have to also vote for the HJC cl-14... i like mine and since i have a big *** head... suomy, arai and shoei dont fit as good.
If you want her to have the best get a Suomy Spec1r, ultra light and they all look badass.
I think though a HJC does fine unless you are road racing or riding for hours on end ( good luck with that)
