Default New rider with Q's on byuing a used bike

I'm buying my first bike. My room mate told me to not buy a bike with over 1500 miles on it or it will be unsafe.

How long do bikes last?
How old is OLD?
Is he right?

I thought Honda bikes should be as reliable as their automobiles...
Thanks

lol, 1500 miles

are you sure he didn't mean 15000 miles? If he meant 1500 then he doesn't know what he's talking about.

bike's will last a good amount, maybe 30k miles with good maintenance.

I would say 20 years old is pretty old. it really depends on how the person took care of it though. A 5 year old bike could not be worth it, whereas a 15 might be depending on price and condition - just like a car.

your room mate is wrong. if he meant 1500 miles, that's barely past the break-in period. I put 4000 miles on my bike in july/august alone. Some members on cbrworld put 70k+ miles on their bikes. If it's been maintained well and taken care of, a bike can last a very long time. The reason you don't see many bikes with high miles is because people usually crash them before they ever get that high.
Honda bikes ARE reliable.
http://www.clarity.net/~adam/buying-bike.html read this article about what to look for when buying a used bike. It's very well put together.

I remember a magazine article a few yrs back. A writer took his cbr 900rr on a world tour. He crossed the oceans by boat and rode where there was land. Aside from breaking a few things due to crap roads (wheel, subframe, and I think he may have even cracked the frame) he put over 170k miles or so on the bike and it was still running strong.

If taken care of they will last.

I also personally knew a guy who stunted his 95 900rr. He had well over 100k miles on his bike and it was still running strong. He overheated it doing burnouts at every show and it would get to the point of spewing coolant out the overflow......

I had a 90 cbr f1 aka hurricane with I believe 50k miles on it before getting rid of it.
