I bought a cheapass ebay resonated test pipe for my crxto use temporarily since my stock cat is starting to rattle from the inside. But is this horrible smell normal? The smell comes and goes during normal driving on the street. However, when I'm on the freeway and smashing the inside of my car smell like fumes. I checked for leaks and couldn't find any. I looked under my carpet in the trunk area and covered any openings I could find. Why would fumes be getting inside my car during freeway driving? I could imagine if I was stopped at a light or backing up or even turning, but not when I'm going at a fast speed. Wouldn't the air flow send those toxic fumes away from my car towards the car behind me. The smell seems like its coming from somewhere behind me.

It may stop after a while, if you just put it on it may be burning off something. I know everytime I go to the muffler shop my car will smell like a welder for a while.

"Smashing"??
Anyways, it's normal for you to smell the fumes if you are running without a cat.
I would always smell really bad when I was running a straight exhaust from the turbo back and an open crankcase ventilation setup. Sometimes I would get light headed from the carbon dioxide fumes if I had to sit in traffic for very long.
If you don't like the smell, put your cat back on there. Otherwise you are just going to have to learn to live with it.

yeah a few years ago when i hollowed out the old cat (didnt know better at the time)in my ej coupe it wouild do the same thing...since there is no cat to filter the fumes its gonna smell nasty...either get urself a new cat or deal with it
everyone behind you can smell it too. when i had some **** in the trunk of my 4 door and it was open. i was on the freeway and exhaust fumes were comin in through the trunk into the cabin.
ohhhhhh i love the smell . Thats jsut the normal smell the car gives with out no cat. i used to have my old95 prelude straight 3 inch piping to cat and it would smell also you get used to it after a while. No im running the same in my ef. ive with it or jsut get a cat

Yah its just temporary until I get more funds to buy a hiflo. I guess its normal? I'll just have to drive with the windows and sunroof open.
The cat on my car has been gutted and I get the fumes too. just keep your window down or put your cat back on.

You people are crazy. You should not be getting fumes into the cabin. This is not normal with or without a cat.
You have leaks. They should be fixed. It is dangerous to be inhaling fumes like that.
With the engine running, have a friend plug/cover up the tail pipe with a rag or towel... basically try to prevent any exhaust from comming out (they will have to push on it and hold the towel there). While your helper is doing that, listen and feel for leaks under the car somewhere.
