ECU retarding timing?!?!?!?!?!?!?
I set my ignition timing at 16BTC with the service connector jumped out. However, if I shut the car off and start it back up again, without changing the ignition timing after setting it to 16BTC the timing has retarded itself way past 18BTC. When I hit the gas it advances the timing back to 16BTC. Not sure if this makes sense, but anyone got any ideas about this? The car is an eg with a b16 in it.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Is the car warm (fan cycled on-off) before you set the timing? (sorry for the questions, I like to make sure there isn't something obvious)
all this happened with the jumper in place?
it will advance past the 16* when it's a cold start or just after you start it when it's warm. It should be back to 16* in a few seconds.

Yeah, the timing is being set with the car up to operating temp. I will set the timing with the connector jumped out then I'll shut it off. When I restart the car the timing light is showing that the timing is retarded.
just so I have it straight...
it remains there for as long as you leave it at idle?
once you blip the throttle it runs back to 16*?
where is the timing prior to the throttle blip?
stock P30? or chipped?

your original post stated that you set it at 16*, the shut it off and it would be >18*
tap the gas and it falls back to 16*
now you're saying that it runs at 16* till you blip then it advances?
BTW it seems that you are backwards... further away from TDC is considered advanced, closer is retarded.
The ECU does set the ignition differently for start up, and it will run in sort of a warm up mode till you blip the throttle.

My bad, yes it retards it after setting timing. It is doing this while the car is up to operating temp. One time I set it and I hit the gas with the timing light on the crank pulley and the timing would go really retard then normal, then retard again. It was bouncing back and forth without moving the distributor.
