Lately, I've been researching and trying to figure out a good suspension set up...I was looking into full coilovers, thinking that would be the best setup...but i started reading in H-T and all I see is "Koni + GC's, Koni + GC's". Okay, here are my questions:
-What is the difference between coilovers and struts and shocks and springs and blah blah?
-What exactly is the Koni + GC setup? (are koni the shocks? and gc are the springs??)
-What exactly is a full coilover setup? (for example: d2's)
In the end, I just want to know what exactly is the best setup for my 98 coupe...and what I would need to get.
--thanks in advance
edit: also, I'm still in high school, so this'll be for street use....maybe some track use in the future, but for now..just street. (but i would still want a good setup)

Koni are the shocks, and Ground Controls are Threaded Sleeves the slip over the Konis to make the fully height adjustable.
A "Full Coilover setup" is a setup where the whole body of the shock is threaded so you can adjust the height of the car.
Both of these setups accomplish the same thing buy doing it differnt ways. Koni's are some of the best shocks in the world.
For you the best setup if you are looking for lowering for looks and a little better handeling, would be too look at lowering springs. These are progressive rate springs that will maintain a close to stock ride while giving you better handeling.
Struts are dampers that also help "locate the suspension" cars with struts do not have an upper control arm, and example would be the RSX.
Your car has shocks, ad does have an upper control arm, the shock only functions damp the suspension nothing more. Most Hondas made from 88-01 had this setup.

you also "mistyped" that his "dampers" "damp" the movement of the suspension.
(wtf is a "dampner"? and why would you want to "dampen" your ride and get all wet?)
if youre going to be correcting ppl, know your ****.

I only Mistyped Dampner the rest is correct. and I do know my **** Tyson, Dampers are the correct, if British, nomenclature for shocks/struts and the Dampen or perform a Damping function for the suspension.

"rest is correct"?
how stuff works... weeee aka "idots guide to things technical".
its a damper. it damps. its not a difference of british nomenclature. difference of those who know suspension (and know how to spell suspenSion) and those who dont.

You do realise a 'shock' is a shock absorber which is actually the function of the spring.
Shock = spring
Damper damps the piston travel.

wow, turned into a flame fest..
anyways, thanks to the people who helped.
solracer - I wouldn't want to go with progressive springs, because I do want a better setup, not just something lower....looks dont matter too much to me, at this point.

hmm..seems like that is what ill be going with.
can anyone lead me in the right direction to buying what i need to buy?
is it just the koni shocks for my car, and some ground control coilovers?
anything else?..and if not, where should i look for those?
--thanks a lot guys.

There is a Group buy going on for Ground control and Koni In the sponser section that is a real good buy.

yeah, i saw that..but isnt that price a little steep?
also, im sure they are konis, but why does it say ground control on the shocks, instead of koni?

so those are koni, and they just have a gc label?
edit: i read the thread..the labels were just for the picture

ahhh. sorry for 100 questions. (i am a noob afterall)
but what kind of springs would i want to go for?
for that ground-control link, they have the following:
front:
340 lb/in
380 lb/in
430 lb/in
545 lb/in
rear:
250 lb/in
350 lb/in
430 lb/in
545 lb/in
is this mostly just affecting stiffness, and how the ride feels?

It affects everything. Do some research, the normal OTS GC rates are 380 lbs/in front 250 lbs/in rear or so, thats what they normally come with.
All these guys like Tyson are more hardcor3z0r (sorry couldnt resist) along with all the roadcourse driving d00ds run rates that promote more rotation out of the car. You'll find that their rates are often a bit stiffer in the rear compared to the front.
For DD and whatnot I would suggest that the OTS rates that GC reccomends would be perfectly fine.
