Pls post your launch technique
Roll down the grid at about 5 MPH. When Robert or whoever gives me the "go ahead" sign I begin to accelerate until I am past the grid worker/pit acces road where I mash it and hit VTEC y0!
rev to 5,500 RPM.
slip the ***** out of the clutch through the first 20 feet, modulating throttle and clutch in order to get a tiny bit of wheel spin.
Its inconsistant, but I have ran my best time this way.

I'm hoping you're referring to a drag race launch or a Solo 2 / Pro Solo launch. The answer depends completely on the surface and what tires you're on.
The one time I went to the strip (on street tires) raising the revs to ~3000 and dumping the clutch seemed to work fine.
Most of the time I short shift until I'm at the braking zone for turn 1 so as to not deafen the guy at pit out.

its that thing where you sit in line for 2 hours, listen to techno music on your bIg b00mIn' SySteM yo!, wait for the light to turn green, drive from 0-83 mph, then stop as your 9" disc front and 5" rear drum brakes overheat, get a little paper slip that has the number "16.8" at the bottom. And then talk about how your hot-air "short ram" intake and fart can makes MaD pOwEr yO!

I bet a civic hatch with 22lb 18" wheels, body kit, 200lbs of stereo equipment and a hot-air intake (with a heat soaked engine bay from waiting in line) would run the 1/4 mile @ 83mph. It was a touch (ok, a large touch) of sarcasm....
drive from 0-83 mph
we don't have any 1/8th mile tracks around here

Usually, I walk over to Chez Summit Point or the snack bar at VIR and order something really greasy, like the Italian sausage or a double cheeseburger. I don't like chips but usually get a cookie. Sometimes I sit at the picnic tables, but most of the time I just go back and sit in my green track chair with a cup holder and mellow before the next session.
Now my dinner technique is completely different, but that is for another post.

har har har....
However my lunch techinque is a little different since we're usually corner working... run in with lunch ticket, grab sandwich, drink, chips.... stuff face, bum ride back out to worker bucket

What car do you drive? I think it depends quite a bit on the car.
On my awd talon, rev to 5.7K, make a wish that the tranny won't break and let go of the clutch. All you get is about 2 seconds of wheel spin.

he sure is...cuz it take skill to drive on road coarses and auto cross...i'm not talkin about nascar either: left, left, left, left, pit...left left left...drags boring..
you're gonna regret sayin' that
FWIW, at the drag strip, I drop my rear tire pressures down to about 22psi, then at the lights, I bring the revs up to 3000-3500rpm, and slip the clutch. I can get 2.0 60ft times (which, for the record, is a damn good time for a fourth gen Camaro on street tires and 3.42 gears), but I'll smell clutch all evening.
At a ProSolo, there is no traction, so I'll launch at idle. The car will bog (even at 3500rpm, the tall first gear is a problem), but I'll slip the clutch again until the tires hook up. I generally get some of the best launches of the class, if I'm awake at the light.

Once again assumptions are made which aren't true. Thanks for the laugh. I autocross about every 2 weeks, and I am leading the points in my class, and I also road race when I have the money. I agree it takes more skill than drag racing, because I do both. But we are talking about more than drivers, there are cars involved too.
I don't have much time, so I'll make this short: dont make fun of drag racing unless you think it will be alright for me to make the same silly comments in a road-racing thread. You all know if someone did that they would be banned pretty quickly. Stop being snooty and show respect for all racing.
EDIT:
I have to make this public service announcement more often than I like: why don't you petition for a separate drag-racing forum?

show respect for all racing.
But make that all legal, sanctioned racing. Illegal racing will not be tolerated.

Sure, sure...but I know how you all are, denouncing illegal drag racing while you drive around at night with a trunk full of cones, looking for a Miata or CRX or RX7 to give you the signal; whereupon you pull into a deserted parking lot, set up 3 right handers, a left, a slalom, and a lane-change, and go at it til the sun rises...

No **** on the comments. Raceing is racing. If it's legit, it's legit. Just because *YOU* don't do it, doesn't mean to make fun of the people who do.
So, if I ask a question about how to handle point-bys in a HPDS, am I expected to catch a bunch of **** from the ECHC guys, because I have a Type R and I'm not racing it?! "You just do the weenie driving schools! Those are for expecting mothers in Volvo wagons! You're not even in A group."
Competition is competition. It doesn't say anything about cone mashers and apex hunters only. In case you didn't read the sign on the door......
"Discussion of modifications, tuning, and driving techniques autocross, road racing, and drag racing."
If you have no valuable comments to add, please, find another topic to spew on.
Besides, if the dude hangs around here, he just might get a hankerin for some cones....but not if you chase em off w/your yo-yo-yo comments. You know who you are...so chill.

DISCLAIMER: I am assuming you are referring to something other than street racing.
jpkl, I hope the responses of some of my colleagues doesn't turn you away from here [the competition forum]. The trouble is, the "regulars" here don't participate in drag racing. What's more, we've recently had a LOT of people come in and ask about street racing stuff...which is completely unacceptable here. So there tends to be a knee jerk reaction to drag racing questions.
I wish we could help you more than we can...like I said, it just so happens that the drivers here tend to be autocrossers and/or road racers, and not drag racers. Luck of the draw I guess. Maybe you can help us and contribute your experiences at the strip...it would help some of us at ProSolo autocrosses for example.
I hope the derogatory comments of others haven't made you (or anyone else) think the road racing/autocross community is a bunch of *********. On the Internet, we tend to be a bit quick to pounce...but the community is actually very cool.
