Default 5th gear grind

ok this is for a buddy of mine with a 92 cb7 ex, when he goes from say 2nd gear into 5th it makes a definite grind and if done a few time you can smell the metal to metal contact, smells like when you grind something down with a grinder. it also does it when going from 3rd to 5th and 4th to 5th. i was wondering could this be due to a lose cable or what, im not used to the cable shifting transmissions since i come from the bar type integras. im trying to check all options before i tell him his trans is going. BTW the tranny fluids been changed, i might tell him to try Gm syncomesh

5th Gear synco is probably going. It happens to me in my CB7 in 3rd gear all the time.

i think i may be having a similar problem (grinds going from 4th to 5th). is this an expensive (or pain in the ***) fix?

It's not cheap, nor easy, unless you're an experienced mechanic. Personally, I would replace the entire tranny before tearing it apart to replace a synchro.

would it be bad to keep driving it with the bad synchro?
