Default Del Sol Performance: Engine Swap Necessary?

Hi,

I'm thinking about getting a Del Sol and would eventually like to get it to run low 14's to high 13's in the 1/4 mile. I was wondering if an engine swap would be necessary or could I reach these times with a Supercharger or Turbocharger? If I do need to swap, what engine do you recommend?

Thanks.

I'm quite familiar with del sol's, a friend of mine has a 93 with a k20a swap and turbo'd and that runs like 14.3's with street tires. The main problem is that he has so much motor and not enough weight that it kills him in the traps, especially 60' times. So with that in mind, if you have an si with a b16a usdm, you could keep it and turbo it to make 13-14's in a quarter just make sure you dont shave too much weight in the front, and well TRACTION-BARS, and LSD are a great thing.

Holy jesus. A k20 should do low 13s to high 12s in a sol.

But I'm just going by my butt dyno and e-racing.

That seems a little high for a K20A. My best friend has a 98 hatch and runs 14.12 with a DX tranny and 12psi of boost. The k20a should be running faster then a SOHC Y8.

There is at least one of my friends that runs an high 12 in a 7th gen with a k20 turbo. I wouldn't say that weight should have that much to do with it. suspension and tires should take care of the problem.

I would probably try to get the one that would not require an engine swap, if possible.

for your goals, get an si because it's cheaper insurance than the VTEC model and boost it. Anything around 200whp and 180ish torque should get you your times with good 60's.

Yeah sorry. I probably had too many when I typed that j/k.

Then you want the DOHC VTEC trim.

But then again, this is probably true too.

You could say I'm partial because I have a boosted si, but the vtec model is much more expensive and is not needed to run high 13's. So with either car, a motor swap is not neccesary, however, a b16 will obviously make better power. It won't run those times n/a though unless you put a lot of work into it

Okay, thanks. So it look like that with an Si or a VTEC I'll have to get a turbo and some bolt ons to run the times that I want?

Sorry for the super late post, I've been on a research trip to the Galapagos Islands off of Ecuador and haven't been able to reach an internet source until now.

Vtec = B16 (vtec). Add nitrous and you'll be there.

SI= D16Z6 (vtec). Add turbo and you're there.

S = D15 (non-vtec). Add H22 and you're there .

K20 swap non turbo is faster than that. not enough weight? are you serious?

SI's have sohc vtec, not b16

Okay, thanks. I don't really want to run nitrous so with a VTEC and a turbo, what times could I expect?

Thanks.

depends on your setup. low 13's is easily attainable without touching internals. There was a local one last year running low 12's with a built bottom end.

i have a 93 S with a b16 swap and a 55 shot of nitrous and i was running 14.1 consistently, with better 60 fts i could have hit a 13.9

I'd say the cheapest way to get to your low 14's would be to use nitrous on a b16/b18c, it's probably not the safest and most reliable though, depending on how often you spray and how big of a shot you use

Okay, thanks. One more thing, does a Civic Si (I believe it's the EM1) have the same motor and what not? Would it get the same times with a turbo?

Thanks.
