yeah thats true but you'd be surprised how many people stay pretty true to their project cars. some peolple know their limits and their budgets too.
Porsche 944 turbo, 9K purchased, 7-8K invested... (lots of maintainance too) nowhere near where I want it, but closer.

Well my "real" car is a totally rebuilt 1992 Cx with B18C5 swap (click the link in my sig) and my "beater" started out as a regular old 70hp 1990 Civic STD model with the 4-speed trans. vinyl seats, one mirror, no A/C, etc. - 100% bone stock since the day my mom bought it back in 1989. It also served as my first car from age 16-18.
I reacquired it from my sister a few years ago to be strictly a beater, but it has since seen:
11:1CR D16A6 build with all brand new parts from Honda
ZC 1-4 gears in an Si case with Si 4.25 final drive
Exedy clutch
14'' HX wheels painted batteship grey
KYB GR-2 struts with Tein S-Tech springs
Si guage cluster with tach
Si seats and rear speaker install kit with cargo cover (rare rare!!!)
Custom 2.25'' exhaust and muffler
DC header
OE Sanden A/C system that blows 32 degrees even in 95+degree heat
That's about all I can think of.

BTW:
My "real" car is done. The last thing I spent money on for it was a brand new OE Acura Integra Type R transmission because mine **** out for the 3rd time, and I was tired of rebuilding it.
People always tell me "you're never done with a project car" but i'm happy with mine and it is truly done.

My project car, beater and DD are all one and the same. It's also my track *****. When something breaks, that's when I think about fixing or upgrading it. I'm fine with that. It's just a Honda.

Believe it or not, my Beater is bone stock down to the Honda Battery.
On the other hand, my Civic Project is done as well. I'm finished modding it and now I'm really don't want to drive it at all, it just sits in my garage. I have not driven it for almost 1 month and it sunny here in S. Cal all the time.
Besides, the way Gas prices are rising no wonder I don't want to drive my project car.
$ 3.89 a gallon here in Pasadena, CA. for 91 Octane.

I understand your sentiment regarding the price of gas, but you have to admit that it is a shame that your project car--the car you claim is done, meaning it is just the way you like it and it needs no more--does not get driven. This makes me sad...

Once you've built something that cannot be recreated (because of either time and/or money constraints) you may have a different outlook on driving your project car.
I built my car to be a driver first and foremost, but honestly it gets driven rarely in the summer because I've got a bike and my beater has ice cold A/C.
Also I never park my "real" car where I cannot see it. This means it's in my home garage with a padlock on the inside of the door, or else it's in plain view of me at all times.
At work?
My car sits in an open stall in the shop right by my service desk.
At the movies or at dinner?
Doesn't happen, car stays home.
Running errands?
I plan ahead and don't take that car.
Trust me when you're done building something that you want to keep forever, you won't drive it nearly as much as you think you would.
I do auto-X mine and drive the **** out of it, but it's no errand-runner any more.

If it's black, you might have my old car (weren't many EX sticks around, took a couple days for the dealership to locate one out-of-state & trade stock for it). I traded in an 87 CRX for it, but just couldn't cope with that floaty EX suspension, made the car feel way heavier than it was.
So I traded it in after 6 months. Thank god Hondas keep their value, I lost money but enough left over to still go towards the new car - a 97 Del Sol VTEC. Discontinued 3 months after I bought it. After a couple years when I started getting dirty looks from service reps when I took it in for maintenance intervals at a dealership. Some people really don't like deep knee bends and haven't sat in one before - so they think I lowered it.
If I ever get a 96 EX again I'd have to dump that OEM suspension. On the highway it just completely disconnected you from the road, starting around 60mph...
The Sol is my daily driver, still mostly stock - CAI, ACT Streetlite flywheel, ACT AI4-HDSS clutch kit, Tein HA coilovers, ITR rear LCAs, 195/60R14 Yokohamas during the summer, 185/65R14 Winterforces during the winter. Suspension wore out, replaced it with Teins, clutch wore out, replaced it with the ACTs... problem is I'm starting to get the new car bug, but there just isn't much out there that interests me...

here in lies my problem..... my first project car, i dont wanna drive near as much... as in rarely where it is parked and i go in somewhere. and now i have the hatch and is my new project. and its almost to the point to where i dont want to drive it anywhere out of my sight. and i bought that hatch as my daily beater so i could park the classic, but i couldnt keep away and had to do work on it. had to, i couldnt resist. so i guess i'm in the market for another beater again.

Damn, you need 2 beaters............................
Just sell one, get another beater and with $$ left over, you mod your Classic.
