Default who does their own mechanic work. i need some ideas.

anybody in here remove/replace their transmissions themselves? armed with a jack and jackstands.

the reason i ask this is because i have to change my input shaft bearing and i really don't know how this is going to be possible without a car lift (allowing me to go underneath).

any ideas?

i've pulled it apart before with the engine out of the bay and it was a hassle to link up to place back in even on the floor. any suggestions? i'm getting charge 180$ to do this.

if you've done it before then just drop the engine/tranny. You can do this by doing one of 2 things:

1)drop the engine via an engine hoist
2)drop the engine by taking off your tires and then lowering it. Put a phone book under the engine for cushion. Now that i think about it you may want to put a phone book under the jack points in the front so you dont scrape anything

its pretty easy to remove your transmission. You just need to take off the upper mount on the transmission, and the side mount on the transmission. while supporting it with a jack. then take off all of the bolts that hold the tranny on and all the sensors, put a jack underneith the tranny and pull. make sure the weight is centered on the jack. wants the tranny slides off all you have to do is then is lower the jack and slide the tranny out. by the way you need some jack stands to hold up the car. i used a honda jack to hold up the engine then my regular jack to take the tranny off. hope that makes sence!

When we did a flywheel on my H22 hatch we pulled the tranny with a jack, stands, a creeper and someone with a sturdy chest.

He just rolled under the tranny and we unbolted it and dropped it on him and rolled him out!

But maybe just drop it on the creeper, and pull it out the side.

YOU CAN DO IT

Yeah tranny is not that bad. I would just unbolt it like someone said instead of dropping the motor. Make sure you have a few strong friends though to get it back on the motor after you change out the bearing that is the only part that is really a pain in the ***. Good luck

I would just jack the car up put safety blocks just in case. Then put a jack underneath tranny and unbolt and lower..vuallla.

Its really not that hard. Just take your time and have a friend with you. Its better to have 2 jacks. 1. Always holding the motor up and the other with a piece of square OSB board on the other under the tranny.

Slide the tranny on the osb board then lower. It turns into a slide at the end and sides off. Then pull out. Putting it back in is the hardest part. I recommend 2 people for safty.

I did a big tranny removal thread a while back. You can search and find it. I honestly don't feel like doing it.

EDIT: I lied.

It's not hard. Id say the tranny weighs 80 lbs or so and the hardest part about the whole project is trying to get it set back on.

I've replaced an 89 accord tranny before in my home garage. Just used jack stands for the car and used a jack to help lower the tranny down. They're not too heavy anyway. Try to find a service manual, it'll tell you everything you need to disconnect. Good luck

Jack stand the car and drop the tranny on your chest. It's not heavy.

A friend of mine and I changed the clutch in my car. We put the car on jack stands and took all the mounts loose except for the side engine mount. We kept the jack under the trans to adjust it up and down to get it off the pins. Trans does not like to come loose, and hates going on even worse. We got it off, and it dropped on his chest. Only problem being that the car was too low to roll it out, and the trans was sorta stuck so we couldn't roll it off his chest. That was fun. I've never heard someone scream so many obscenities over something so trivial

"take my hand child..."

i had a rickety old creeper that we used to do stuff like this with...
once you get everything unbolted stick the creeper under the car and lower it and set everything on the creeper... then jack the car back up and slide the creeper out. it will save your back for a minute...

I did my own tranny with my step father.
It wasnt that bad, we unbolted the mounts, the bolts..censors..all that good stuff and droped it my jack, I also used my honda jack to support my motor.
The worst part is putting it back in, cause you have to line everything up...its a bitch!! lol

GOOD LUCK ANYWAY THOUGH MAN
