My niece was told she needs a new control panel on a 2003 Honda Accord.
Is it reasonable to expect a control panel to break down in less than 2 1/2 yrs? I would like to hear from anyone who has had a similar experiece and know what recourse there is to get HONDA to participate in the cost.
Thank you!

Yes, she took it to the Honda dealership, estimate was $980 plus labor. Dealership said they will "try" to get Honda to participate some in the cost but that seems like a warranty item to me.

tell the service manager that you want HONDA to fully pay for it , it is bullshit that it should go bad so fast , if manager declines to do so , ask, NO, demand the phone # of the HONDA district manager , bitch ,yell ,and scream and show your disappointment with HONDA , express your feelings that you should not have to pay a dime ,,,,,,,,,,you must have more than 36k miles ???

unless there is something we don't know about and even if it is past 36K something like a control module should not fail within 2.5 years (unless there was abuse) and Honda should take care of it.

If she's got less than 36k miles, it should be covered by the warranty. Or they have to explain WHY is isn't. Salvage title? Car was underwater in NewOrleans? Coffee spilled into the control panel?
But I've always found it works better to quietly demand, instead of yelling & screaming. Browse http://www.honda.com I bet you can find a phone number for Honda USA customer service if they won't tell you.
My local dealer seems absolutely terrified about bad customer-satisfaction surveys getting back to corporate headquarters... Just in case you can use that information

I love watching people come in and do that to my service manager. He'll just tell them to have a nice day and point em to the door. They get nothing.

Hello. It's "the niece" here.
The car is a 2003 Accord EX with 47K miles...well over the 36K Warranty, I know.
I received word this afternoon that Honda agrees to pay for the part but I will have to pay for the labor. This is on top of the $75 diagnostic fee I paid yesterday. Although I am thrilled that Honda is helping, I just feel like I should not have to pay for any of it since this is an obvious premature failure of the Control Panel.

That is a good compromise and I would be happy with that considering that the car is 11K past warranty. Where is this part located? in the dash or engine compartment?
If it is in the dash it will be most likely 3-4 hours labor. I am lucky I guess I drive a 1994 that has given me 0 problems since i bought it and it was a salvage title car

That's how Honda usually handles good will repairs. They pay for the part, you pay the labor. It is out of warranty, they're not obligated to do anything.

I am very thankful that Honda is paying for the part. However, I spoke with a lady in my same situation who had hers replaced Tuesday free-of-charge at another dealership in town (she was over her warranty miles also). From what I understand, Honda knew that 10% of 2003 Accords are having this problem. If mine was the only one, it would be another story and I would leave it at that. But after speaking to a third dealership who is seeing this problem, I feel that what they are doing is not enough. Warranty or not, I am not responsible for a Control Panel (in dash) that only lasted 2 1/2 years. I buy Honda's (this is my 5th) b/c they are reliable & wonderful cars...I can't imagine that Honda would not make this right.
GATHER UP ALL THE INFORMATION AND WHO YOU SPOKE WITH AND TAKE IT TO HINDA AND THEY WILL MAKE IT RIGHT FOR YOU. SCREAMING AND YELLING WILL NOT HELP TOO MUCH. Sorry for the caps as I do data entry and I forget to turn it off. If all else fails, take it to the same dealer your friend did and they may be able to get you the same deal. You are right if 10% are failing, Honda should make it right free of charge.
I agree that screaming & yelling will not help...it's not my style anyway!
I do feel very strongly about this though. I have wasted a lot of time driving back & forth to the dealership (not to mention the gasoline...whew!). But I feel that I am not being unreasonable considering what I know about the Control Panel problem in other 2003 Accords besides mine. And it is not so much a $ issue now, it's the principle of the matter. I hope that other 2003 Accord owners will not have to go through this hassle.

I don't think it's anywhere near 10%. Someones exaggerating.

get the district manager phone number and call him , tell him your disappointment in hondas , that uyou have owned 5 and were planning to get another 1, then tell him about the other people with the same problem,,,,,,i feel that if there are more than a few cars out there with same issues at such low miles than it is a defect and HONDA should fix it for free
