Hoosier R3S05s
I got my october issue of SportsCar last night, and I was checking the tire rack add. I noticed that they now have 1 size available for the Hoosier R3S05: 205-50/15.
just FYI.
just FYI.
Time for me to buy new wheels in time for MARRS 10.
I don't know how else I'm gonna get close to DePedro's new ITA record of 1:27.792.

Did you rent an ITC car or something?
Did you rent an ITC car or something?
No, Ryan...that was MARRS 7.
It's amazing what two new tires can buy you nowadays (an ITC drive while the owner's brother gets married). Anyways, ol' #72 was back up and running as of Friday afternoon and other than some issues w/ handling around T5 it was great in the cool air.
I managed to eek out a win on Sunday after 5 lead changes and just did my level best to hang w/ DePedro's Miata, settling for 2nd after leading the first three laps on Monday.
With the likes of DePedro, Dohne, M. Carpenter, and Ray Lee Chee running ITA at the OG Racing Labor Day Double I know Summit was THE place to be this holiday weekend.
And we can't wait to have you back, Mark! Have fun at school down Charlotte way.

Hey balled, I saw you win Sunday and get second Monday, I have some pics of that Monza incident if you want them. I was sorta between turns 6 and 7 over the weekend. I took pictures Sunday but unfortunately I still have a 35mm slr and haven't gotten them devoloped yet, my buddy though was there with me Monday and took some with his digital slr.

Sure, send them on to me (I'll PM you w/ an address). It was unfortunate as I got run off by the red 240SX and had two wheels off going into T5. Kinda hard to brake that way but the driver was waaaay cool about it and told me he thought there was nothing I could do. Big
to all the ITA / ITB drivers this weekend, and all the workers who made sure that over 365 drivers were safe!

Don't know if I can afford it. As we were discussing Sunday night, my budget's about shot for the year, but never say never. I assume I should look for more info on the NESCCA.org site?
Also, thanks to VACRX73 for some great hi-res shots of a very twisted CRX from this weekend.

Word from the SM guys, who have been using them for month or so with "SM" on the sidewall as opposed to R3S05, is that they have slightly more rounded shoulders and lower rolling resistance without sacrificing grip (that last part is part Hoosier people talking and part drivers talking). No word that I've seen on durability vs. the R3S04, but they're supposed to be better. The R3S05 was the tire tested for SM spec tire, so it's bound to be at least as durable as the R3S04.

Hmmm, that's interesting. I love the R3S04's but I certainly wouldn't mind getting some more life out of them.

SM guys are saying 3 weekends out of them, with some rubber still left for the 4th weekend but lower laptimes

We're getting 3 good weekends as well, which is awesome considering that our weekends almost always include a sprint AND an enduro. In terms of hours, we're somewhere in the neighborhood of 8 competitive hours per set of tires.
Thats damned good for a tire that is this sticky and doesn't need to be shaved, and its hard to believe the 05 will be better.
And then we probably get 3 to 4 more hours out of them for practice, schools, and test days.
The trick to maximizing them is to use two sets of wheels. Use the "fresh" tires for qualifying and racing and use the older tires for practice. We NEVER put a heat cycle on good tires for a session that doesn't count.
The one exception to this is when you are doing suspension setup and testing. Always run your best tires for that.
I'm just always afraid when there is an "improvement" to a race tire. Remember when the GForce replaced the old R1? Yeah, thats when I switched from BFG to Hoosier.

one to watch for next year is the new Hankook Z214 (look like hoosiers).

a guy from thetireshoppe.com brought a few sets to the mazda DE at shenandoah last weekend to let people use. They were absolutely amazing, really put Toyos to shame.
2 days of being used every session on the very abrasive shenandoah surface and the grooves were still pretty deep.

They were 1-1.5 s/lap faster than the Toyo, and I'm pretty certain I didnt get all there was out of them - I'd never driven on a tire that grippy before.
That tire dealer sure knows what he's doing though. Grip like that is crack. The first hit is free.....

"Grippy" is not all there is. I actually think the Kumho is "grippier" than the Hoosier but I like the Hoosier better. Lots of people seem to agree.
Fowler once said the thing about the Hoosier is its "Usable slip angle." How I describe it is "telepathic." The car just seems to slide a leeetle bit, allowing you to get on the throttle WAY early and feel in total control at all times. It always seems to go exactly where you want it to go.
Its hard to explain in words.

Thats the way this hankook felt... it felt fantastic with a little bit of slip angle and slide.
I have no idea if they are better, worse or indifferent to the hoosiers.

It is referred to as .............skating.........a controlled slide than pow !!...on the power and you are gone.........everyone should try the Hoosier slicks sometime.....the grip is incredible....I still haven't found the limit of adhesion........although I have done some nice skating through Turn 10 at Summit lately...

yep. like I said, something to watch for next season. Definately seems to me like it is a tire that could get you on the top step of the podium just as well as anything else out there, and last for 4 or 5 weekends doing it. Personal preference and driving style aside.
