Find a way to figure out what your air/fuel ratio is, a wideband A/F ratio gauge is preferred, to see if you are running rich. If you are, then find a way to lean out your A/F ratio, like putting in a piggy back fuel management system, or reprogram your ECU by replacing the chip with one with a leaner A/F ratio. Or you could make sure that the fundamental fuel savings maintenance are done, like clean air filter, clean spark plugs, caps and rotors, etc.

I think you should atleast be getting 120 miles per half tank

What ECU are you using?

Is the back of the car covered in black soot?

thank you for all your replies they are all greatly useful,

as far as CELs, yes i am, its off when i start the car and after i drive it for a lil bit it turns on.

the setup im using is as follows

its a 97 ex, with
92 b16a
and the ecu *shrugs* its labled 91 the obd1 plugs fit though

im using my obd2 wiring harness, with a obd2 -> 0bd1 harness

i tried jumpping the CEL from the plug, it wont go, the obd2 code reader wont read i dont know how else to get that lil fricker to flash :-\ or tell me anything other than its on...

as far as black spot on the back of my car, negative, i cant really tell the car is black, not that i noticed though, but it does smell funky :-P

ill try use a wideband and try figure out if im rich ornot, but OMFG the gas prices are killing me :-P

thanks for all your help

hope this added information helps you guys help me

There "should" be a serial number on the side of the ecu (computer). For obd1 you have a few options, but look at the center 3 digits. There "should" be at least one of these P28, P30, P72, P73, P75. Only the p30-72-73's are DOHC VTEC ecu's. If you have any other 3 digit serial then the ecu is probably chipped and can have a super aggressive fuel curve. If not then be sure the O2 sensor is hooked up right. Also be sure to check the MAP sensor. If these check out then look toward the fuel pressure regulator (which may remain open (full presure)) or a basic tune up.

Does a bad o2 sensor effect gas mileage?

much like riding on the bump stops effects ride quality.

okay update for you all

i still dont understand the CEL, i can start the car and ohh no CEL, but after driving a bit it turns on...

i shot the timing, its dead on, so its not the timing, so tomarrow im going to try a diffrent ECU, and open mine, check for any chip

because its running very rich

i had a friend follow me, when i dump it, it pours smoke, and you can smell it

hopefully its just the ECU tripping out

this may be because of a poor quality obd2-1 harness. it sounds like the ecu is resting itself when the car is turned off. this would lead one to believe the it's constant feed is running switched (w/ the ign)
