Default Stock ls rod bolts?? What do YOU rev to? please post.....

Those of you who have stock ls bottom end including stock rod bolts, what do you reliably rev to? I know they can stretch after 7500 but how long can you rev to this rpm for or higher without having to worry? Im curious because im reving my n/a ls w/ 403's and rocket valvetrain to 7500 but im just wondering if my motor is a ticking timebomb. Please post up your experiences, good or bad, thanks

yes my 403's held thier power to 7500(148 whp) it surprised me as well because i thought power would drop before then. I am using a ys1 b16 tranny

Well let's see here because the best choice would be to get arp rod bolts because of the strength of them. But I haven't used them on two of my motors. My LS went 18,000 miles on crower 403 cams running to 7800-8000 until I seized a piston from a leaking head gasket. My current ls/vtec has seen 11,000 with hitting rpms up to 8500. But I am using gsr rod bearings, gsr oil and water pump, fully balanced motor, and professionally assembled. All those components help keep the temperatures stable when revving that high. In turn keeping the metals cooler down there and less likely to bend, stretch, crack, break or transform.

Also a buddy of mine had an 11 sec all motor ls/vtec that ran a whole season on stock rod bolts shifting at 9000. And he built my ls/vtec saying if it is built right it will be fine, so I took his word for it.

And there are plenty other stories where ls rod bolts have lasted. But at the same time, there are a lot of stories where they haven't, whether because of poor assembly or the strength of the bolts.

But on a stock ls bottom, I would drive to 7600-8000 very conservatively because the motor is not meant to handle high heat in those rpms.

you should try it and find out. LS blocks are seriously cheap.

It sounds like your plan is to use a unbuilt block, and just slap a head on with normal modifications for vtec.

To the question id say shift at 7K, that way you allow for a little rpm spike between shifts. Honda didnt make such good motors because they make the bare necessities.

9.2 ls compression will kill vtec seriously however. The bang for the buck is really good for higher compression pistons....if ya do that its like why not just spring for arp rod bolts...even more bang.

thanks vtecDA9....my motor is low mileage b18b from hmotors(i know its healthy) and it see 7500 on average once a day. Ive just thought exactly what u said that some people's last and some dont. I plan to build another ls bottom with arp bolts acl's and pr3's sometime this winter but im just trying to get an idea on how long the stock one is gonna last. I dont think ill have much of a problem but im a puss sometimes and will get paranoid trying to listen for a rod knock lol. thanks for the input

the rod bolts are not gonna give up on you all the way up to about 9k rpm's. other parts in the motor will give up first like the rod itself, the valve, valve spring. i have used stock ls rod's with the stock rod bolts and rods and crank with B16 pistons in a ls/vtec set up and reved to 9K all day. but then again its also how u assemble the motor, not just the part itself.

i too am building a LS and i just happen to have a set of pr3(b16) rods laying around. my question is, has anyone machined pr4 rods to fit pr3 rod bolts? and is it worth it?

why do you want to hear about it? you want someone to encourage you to shift after 8k? Just because someone else is doing it doesnt mean that you can, but go ahead and take the gamble.

BTW, I rev'ed out to 9000 on stock rods bolts. twice though cuz i misshifted. motor is still fine. go ahead and try it. Do it! Do it! Do it!

Im not looking for encouragement on reving my motor to the sky,im simply trying be realistic on what i could rev to on a daily basis. I asked about reving to 7500 in my post not over 8k so i dont know where you came up with that assumption as to trying to go past 8k. "Oh thanks dudes i think ima go raise my revlimit to 11k now!" get real.
