an Old "OW" Roberts TZ. if it is the 1983 daytona bike it is the OW680. if you ever get the chance to check out some of the older daytona races on vid or dvd, do so. the battles were epic. a REAL manufacturers battle. in 1983 after YEARS of yamaha two-stroke dominance at daytona. Honda was determined to win that race. Yamaha had something like 13 consecutive wins there going into that year. You have to be able to put things in perspective, the manufacturers brought the absolute BEST equiptment to that race to in an atempt to win it for the pride and sales factor. The makers brought in the BEST riders in the world, yamaha had Kenny Roberts sr. and a young kid by the name of Eddie Lawson... Honda had Freddie Spencer in the year of 1983. (just think if yamaha brought Valentino Rossi and honda brought Biaggi, just to win a single non points race... thats how important the race was in those years). In 1983 honda decided that it had enough defeat, and manufactured a purpose built, 1 race ground up motorcycle...the "FWS1000". this was a million dollar four stroke machine built in an era when two-strokes rules the world... 1000cc's, Oval piston's, Eight(8) valves per cylinder, cabable of over 190mph in 1983. yamaha had to answer, they brought in a one off TZ... the OW680... a bored and stroked 500cc formula 1 machine. A truely epic battle! I can not rememebr who was on pole that year. but at the drop of the flag, it was ***** to the wall. NEVER have you seen bias ply tires tortured in such a fashion. Roberts was off with Freddie in .000 pursuit, and eddie trailing a constant .2-.3 behind. Needless to say after a short time the race was over as far as any other riders were concerned. Roberts LITERALLY rode the tires off the OW... the rear end snaking massively on the banking during flat out up shifts at over 150-170mph. Very awesome stuff. The riding by all three was so agressive that the race for Kenny, Eddie and Freddie was over by around lap 10.... but it was like the hagler hearns fight that only lasted 3 rounds... never to be foregotten by those that saw it first hand.

Grahm crosby I f memory serves me right. another former champion, he tooled around in fourth and ended up taking the win for Yamaha. All three Roberts, Lawson and Spencer had to pull into the pits and DNF after doing several tire changes each. but the first 1/4 of the race and the build up to the race was one for the history books
