i have scat h beam rods and im gonna use stock ls pistons with them....anyway is it possible to press stock pistons on aftermarket scat h beam rods?? does anyone know how much amachine shop charges for this (ballpark figure)...and does it mess up the rod pressing stock pistons on them....for example if i wanted to get weisco pistons later can i reuse the same rodS??

If the rods are machined for pressed in pins you can. Most afrermarket rods are set up for floating pins though. You could probably get groves machined into your pistons for pin locks.

A machine shop should be able to tell you.

you need someone with a vertical milling machine (bridgeport) some small slitting cutters, a rotary table or indexing head and some means of fixturing. thats to cut the circlip grooves. if the pins on the scats are larger than the pins on the pistons, then the pistons wristpin bore needs to be enlarged and honed to fit so now you need someone with a sunnen honing cabinet and mandrels.

all of this work times 4 for the wristpins and 8 for the circlips = $$$$

what OEM pistons do you feel are worth this investment, or better yet what abuse do you expect stock pistons to handle yet stock rods to fail? also its pretty easy to shatter stock pistons when pressing out wristpins. or worse, crack them and not notice before they go in your motor.

bump for more info.

Considering putting scat rods in my ls/vtec buildup. For $300 i figure it'll be a good investment but if i gotta buy pistons too it might not happen.

well the truth is its a lot of work, so bargain pricing probably isnt what you are looking for. again, a failure down there can cost you a lot more in the long run, taking a good cylinder head and maybe block/crank/oilpump with it.

you are really gonna hafta just do some research on the pin diameters of each part and start calling machine shops. diesel rebuilders will have the equipment too, doesnt have to be a strictly high performance shop. you might get lucky, the high gas prices have slowed the machine shop industry pretty noticeably this month but i wouldnt be surprised if someone told you $400 depending on what exactly has to be done in your specific case. i mean its an unusual job so they have to account for setting it up too. may not be worth it and no one on honda-tech can quote you a price, you just gotta call around and see.
