Hello From Rally Tennesee
PhilsTireService.com Team GTI is having a great time here in TN. I drove HANDS DOWN the coolest section of road I've ever been on yesterday - a 5-mile stage full of 70+ mph corners, not one of which was level. Everything was "over crest" or "into crest." We averaged 60 mph, plus or minus, on every stage yesterday.
The last stage ran in the dark and boy, oh boy - it's nothing like racing at Summit Point at night, where you've been through any given corner dozens of times during the daylight hours. The organizers said that there were 1500 spectators on that stage but all we saw were camera flashes where they were grouped, so it was hard to count.
The surface is real oiled gravel, so it's got a layer of loose stuff in lots of the corners. We're running full-tread Toyos from Phil's - our rain tires - and they are working pretty well.
Standings after day one of the 2-day deal are...
1 Donnelly/Lancer P1
2 Lilly/Evo IV P1
3 OBrien/STi P1
4 Gardner/Audi P1
5 Bombara/Neon M2
6 Scott/Focus M2
7 Knestis/VW M2
8 Carapetyan/Integra S
9 Lawrence/VW M2
10 Frick/VW M2
11 Pugh/Eclipse P1
12 Heitkamp/RSX S
13 Spence/GTI M2
14 Barnett/Scirocco M1
Pablo is running in Modified 2wd (M2) and we are really pleased to be where we are in the current standings. Nothing's busted and we have another full day to go. If you are within a couple hours' drive of Linden, TN, you should come out and see the fun.

Mwah-mwah-mwahhhh....
And then it was done.
Our auspicious rally debut ended 5.4 miles into the first stage today, when the simple act of running a little wide at the exit of an 85+ mph left turned into a right rear in the ditch. A little countersteer - funky things happen when the left front is in the air - turned into a big stub of the nose into said ditch...
...which lobbed poor Pablo onto his up-until-this-point shiny roof.
Good seats (Recaro), stout cage (Competition Cages), and my Isaac did their job. Both driver and co-driver are 100% after the incident but, even though he drove OK afterward, poor Pablo is going to need a new shell.
Our season is done but watch for "Pablito" - son of Pablo - in time for next season.

PS - no pictures, you bloodthirty bahstahds.

Hey, you should get another shell...
Oh... Wait...
Too bad Kirk. Sounds like it was fun anyway.
Were you doing that Renee thing where you had so much fun you were smiling and giggling even after you crashed the car?
Me - Will you at least pretend that you're upset.
Her - I can't, it was so much fun...

Sorry to hear about the car...but glad to hear that you are OK
Sounds like all that cage and safety equipment was money well spent indeed...

We drove Pablo onto the trailer.
Even a loon like me gets a trailer for a 10-hour tow.
A couple of adjustments to the above post-mortem. The co-driver is actually more like 94%. She bounced her head off of the wing of my chair (she had a non-wing Recaro) and was complaining of a stiff neck, and bruised her leg on the hand-held extinguisher.
Another lesson: If your window net mounts are between the cage and the roof or pillars, they can get squashed in a rollover, making it hard to undo them. This is probably more of an issue in an IT car than in some others because we can't tie the cage to the pillars.

Rally TN was unique - and I ran it - because it is all tarmac and 100+ stage miles long. Entry fee was a stiff $795. They had some new-event teething problems, some of which resulted from rallying closer to civilization that we usually do but it was a great event. I'd like to do it next year but this off has reminded me of how spoiled we are, racing at places like VIR where most mistakes cost you only time.

Hah! There AREN'T any. I think one kid took a couple shots in service before we got the car cover out, and someone might have snunk one or two at the beer bash, when we uncovered him to take out the DL1 and Isaac. We wanted to remember Pablo in better times...

Man, what a bummer! Very sorry to hear about poor Pablo. After all the fun we had, I had that sinking stomach feeling as I read it. Let me know what will need to be done in the suspension department as ditches and performance dampers don't always play well together.
Sorry about the co-driver being roughed up. You didn't say who the co-driver was except for a "she". Was it Mrs. K? Whomever she is, I hope she is better soon.

Thanks, Lee. I'll be in touch on the damper question.
Interestingly, we went down to 500/425 springs (F/R), ride heights a just about stock (top of the adjusment on the rears, about 1/2" from max high on the fronts), and rebound at full soft, and the car handled GREAT on the two smoother stages. It was too stiff on the rougher, longer stage - bucking a little over washboards - but that had nothing to do with my boink.
Co-driver was experienced right-seater Amy Feistel, of Cary, NC. She's kind of a hired gun right now, running with a number of good rallyists. And me.

That's the harsh part. I'm less than an hour away so it beckons...
The silver lining here is that I get to go to NYC to watch my wife run the marathon so it won't be too painful.

well, I guess the amount of pain depends on how fast she is, right?
Just kidding, I am just jealous 'cause I can't run a marathon.

Hey -
Sorry to hear about the car. I've watched the buildup and evolution of Pablo closely as I'm interested in how those cars do in ITB. If I was starting something new from scratch I'd be tempted to go that way.
Good luck with the new shell...you can rebuild him...stronger...faster...the $6 million VW!

Uh, yeah - we've budgeted something less than that for the rebuild but thanks.
