Default K&N or off brand filter?

Well I am finishing my Y8 engine swap and I need a new filter to go on my short ram. I went to the "Zone" to pick up a filter and noticed they had the universal cone style filters for $20. The K&N filters are like $60. Does the K&N filters really offer any better performance besides the fact you can clean them?

P.S. I searched, but the search function was disabled.

See my air filter was a K&N that came with the intake (was on when I got the car) I don't think whoever had it before me and it was just unclean-able. Plus it really didn't fit well into the space left, it had to be shoved down and was bent
dented. I was thinking of just buying a HKS filter, anyone have any experience with them?

You mean the "universal" cone style filter right? If so do they sell those at most parts store and how much they run?

K&N is pretty much the best out there, if you care about performance , get the k&N

Stupid question, but do they have universal at pep boys or autozone? I didn't see anything there that looked like it would hook up to my short ram.

Yes thats what I am talking about. At Autozone they have some universal 3" filters. They come in like three different colors and have Japanese writing on them. I think I am going to try and HKS filter though.

Oh yeah, I was looking for one of those too, but couldn't find one. They had the 3" ones for the Mustang, but they are way to long.

I saw this exact test on a Supra forum, Out of Apexi, HKS, K&N and others, the Apexi filters flowed the most most and gave the most power gains.

I'm currently running an HKS filter on a short ram intake. But unfotunately because it was installed by the previous owner I can't make any comparisons. The main thing to remember about the HKS element is that it is not washable and run about $20 a pop. It seems to let a lot of air in and is pretty loud...you can even hear it over the radio occassionaly.

Actually I just bought one of the new HKS cone filters and they are washable. I think the regular air box HKS filters are not still.

So if the choice was between an HKS and a K&N, what would you all suggest?

Personally I love K&N filters. On the other had with college and gas prices I try to take more economical choices. I found a new HKS cone filter the guy had no use for anymore and got it for $17.

I purchased mine form overboost.com.

I'm not for sure what HKS filter the other guy has but I've never seen a washable HKS filter. Here is a pic of the one I have.
