In an effort to get my hx to save some more gas I decided to take out everything that I didn't really need in there. I cleaned out the glovebox, console, under the seats, and any trash that was in there finally got thrown away. I also took out my 12" sub, amp, and spare tire and all of the car cleaning items that I had stashed in the bottom of the trunk, I'm sure the total was 50 lbs or so that I took out. Also I'm starting to shift at 2 grand and coast in gear when stopping so I can save even more gas.

and here I wanted to show a picture of both the sub and spare tire on the scales together and it is showing 48.5 lbs.


Sorry about the pic's but the scales are at work and we don't really use it all that much so it's very cramped around them and space is limited.

take a **** everyday before you leave

 

This worked for me:


scrape the tar off the floor of inside and trunk.

Gut your doors.

Remove all A/C and heater components.

Race in a carbon fiber thong.

 

Is gas really expensive where you live?

last time I checked 87 was $3.199 so it's not too terribly high but it has been constantly going up and who knows when it's going to end. I work full time and I get paid every week but I still feel like I don't have any money left over after all the bills so I did it because 1. it was free and 2. it saves a little bit of weight and 3. it was a good motivation to clean the car out. This is a dd so I'm not going to be gutting it out. I know by changing my driving will yield more results than taking the crap out but also it can't hurt either.

I can remember it was $1.139 for 87 octane in the summer of 99, when I first bought the car (that was aug. 99 btw) it took $11-$12 to fill up and now it's $32-$34 so thats almost 3x as much. I know it's been 6 yrs but damn everything else hasn't inflated as much as gas has. I'm 25 living at home (flame away I don't care, saves me money) making $10.25 per hr fulltime. I'm taking some classes at the local community college so hopefully when I get done with that I'll be able to find a job that pays a lot more. Car is paid off and I have liability ins. and my insurance is going to renew and hopefully it'll drop enough to offset these high gas prices.

 

hell it went from 2.54 to 3.49 in 2 days here

 

next weekend I'm planning on giving it a tune up since it's due for one anyways, also I'm going to clean out the tb and do the seafoam treatment. I've used it through the gas and oil but I haven't used it through the brake booster line before. That will work great since I'm changing the plugs anyways. I read on another post where mistabone said that the rear bumper acts as a parachute so I'm going to look at ways to divert the air differently. I'm going check the psi in the tires tomorrow, I'm running 195/65/14 and next time I get tires I'll probably go back with the stock size, less rotating mass and less contact patch with the pavement.

The loss of weight does help, and over a year, yes there will be some money saved, although probably less than 20$. They say for every 10lbs you loose, you gain 1hp. Thats not literal, but I hope you get what I mean. Your engine is working a little less now, but will you notice it in your calculated MPG? My guess is no, cause for removing 50lbs, you may get 1mpg at the most. Still, its good not to tow so much ****. So ditch the spare, ditch the jack, and replace it with a cell phone so you can call your friend if you hit a nail, hehe.

 

ok i dont see how that's going to help you. what happens when you ride with a friend? that will get back what you just took out plus 100 more pounds.

just gut the interior that will actually take some weight out.

if you're that damn concerned about gas prices, dont drive. i live in San Francisco and i still fill up with 91 and i dont even check the price. working at AMC makes me a baller

 

I might actually agree to take the back seat out. I mean its a coupe right? Do you really use the back seats for anything other than throwing **** in? If girls are gonna crawl over ya to get in the back, then worry about it. Otherwise...um, PS sucks off the motor, convert yo manual steering? Open windows versus a/c, its more fun that way anyway.

I can't go without the nice stereo and basics in my daily driver, sorry. Thumbs up to you for going the extra mile though!

 

I def. changed my driving habits and I know thats going the be the biggest difference I can make but I also felt like removing the extra weight couldn't hurt either. I just wanted to take the crap out that I didn't really need in there. I'd be happy even if I could squeeze anything extra out of it but I'm not going to go all out either.

Taking out the spare tire? I wouldn't suggest it. You'll need it one day and will regret removing it unless you have a buddy on call in case of emergencies.

125 miles and it's used only an 1/8th so far. I have been trying to look at the tach a lot more and shift at 2 grand, it's hard to do that taking off in first gear by the time I look down I'm already at 3-3.5k but the rest of the gears I don't have any trouble doing that. I'll keep all of you posted on what I can get out of this beotch.
