Default Shifting to park in a moving vehicle. (Roll Shifting)

Hi,
The car was moving at about 5 MPH and I accidently hit the gear stick (automatic transmission) and shifted it to Park. I heard some grinding sounds and I immediately hit the brakes. I thought I had burnt the transmission but the car is running fine. What are the things I should check for that might have gone wrong and possibly show up later. I am willing to repair them now instead of paying a bigger price later on.

well, if that was before you had you "accident" it doesnt matter...
the idea is to drain it, and then look for metal flakes. lots of metal meant that the gearing grinded up itself, and you might have a catastrophic failure in the near future

The noise you heard is called the Park pawl. Basically it is just a toothed wheel that a rod engages.... when the rod is engaged, it can't turn or roll away. Think of it like a fan you might have in your window. If the fan blade is stopped... you can jam something between the blades and keep it from turning. If you try to jam something in before the fan stops turning, it will make a very similar noise to what you heard. I think draining the trans fluid and refilling it is a good idea, but I highly doubt you did any significant damage... your trans will be fine.

When you drain it you may want to get a funnel or better a screen to place under drain plug so you can separate any particles from the fluid to better visually inspect. Also you can check your magnet on the drain plug for stuff.

Ouch

Only time I've "accidently" put an auto car in park was one owned by Avis, I was going about 40 mph at the time Car still drove fine after that, so if a pos Ford can take it, an Accord can take it at 5mph

Hondatechpro is correct.
Although I've seen one catastrophic failure from this with a TH200 (GM Turbo-Hydramatic 200), (cracked the case), It sounds like you dodged the bullet.
A clue would have been chunks of aluminum and pieces parts on the ground and a big F...in' puddle under the car.
