Wonder if we will see any imported to the US for some track fun!
I would love to take one out for a few laps.

It's a gorgeous car and probably fast a **** (with the right driver) but I don't even want to think about the expense of an "off" in that thing. The aluminum/CF bonded unibody is pretty tough to repair if it ever gets damaged.
Per Lotus the frame on the Elise is "unrepairable" in the event of something getting bent

How does that affect Elise insurance rates?

Actually when I checked into them the rates on an Elise weren't significantly higher than what I was paying on my ITR. I seem to remember then being around $110/month thru Progressive.
Christian, who's going to wait until the Elise is cheap enough to be a track-***** before he buys one.

It is kind of scary some of the machinery being sold out there for "track days". But I bet it is a scorcher. I wonder what kind of margin for error driving a car with that performance envelope has.

Nah... figure another 3-4 years and they'll be down in the upper 20's which will be do-able for a track/weekend car. I've seen 05 Elises's selling pretty regularly for high 30's/low 40's when the originally stickered for $50k. On top of that, some dealers are selling for $2k under MSRP in an effort to move them off the lot.
Christian, who was afraid that Americans, as a whole, were too soft to actually buy the Elise in any significant numbers...
