solid check engine light....
okay, finally went to start my motor up for the first time last night, so i turn the key to on to prime the pump, and the CEL stays on. Now i had been running on this same ECU for weeks now with no prob. with a SOHC. So of course i try to see why (grab my trustee paper clip), but i get nothing...pump primes and everything though. car started and it smelled like it was running very rich, like a safe mode. Didnt try driving/revving it, but anyways the point of this question...
I had painted my block/accessories( water neck, factory PCV can...etc..) do you think that if there is paint on the ground on the thermostat housing, that it would make the computer do this? Please help, i want to put some damn miles on this motor!

solid ecu code means one thing and one thing only: ecu error. if it is a chipped ecu you can try cutting J1 (the jumper wire directly above the eprom socket), if it goes away then a bad soldering job is the culprit.
if its not a chipped ecu, then you're gonna have to get a new ecu. they can be had for anywhere from $40-100 on ebay for a good p28 computer. if you're having trouble finding one just pm me, i have a few lying around i could get rid of. i have a few that have been chipped and a few virgin ones.

It's possible, the ecu gets it's ground from the t-stat housing. A bad connection is known to cause alot of different problems.

If the key is on and the engine is not running, the CEL should be illuminated. That is the check for the light's functionality. If the CEL stays on while the engine is running, then it is a problem. Does your CEL stay on while the engine is running?
