To Those That Have Re-painted their Cars...
If you have had your hatch or CRX repainted, did you just get the single stage special in a solid color, or did you go basecoat/clearcoat? Reason I'm asking is, Im on the fence about how much i really want to spend on a paint job and weather or not I will kick myself If I do one over the other. Pics of results would be helpful as well although im sure new paint no matter what will look good on a small picture. Anyone else feel free to voice concerns or ask questions because Im sure as these cars are 14-15+ years old they are in need of some assistance in the paint department. TIA~

i went with a base/clear. more durable. i painted my 91 hatch championship white. i went with that color for 2 reasons, 1. i love that color and 2. my car was frost white from the factory so door jams and engine bay didn't have to be painted because i am not that picky. good luck!
good question I need to know the same thing but I think I'm going to do it all myself with my gf's dad because he does body repairs on their cars and repaints them I just have to rent the booth so I'm not even sure what color or how great it's going to be... but hes damn good
if possible, go for a base / clear . someone i knew had his done without a base (they initially sanded off the clear and went from there) and after, he needed to have his car re-sprayed. originally a factory dark red civic, he wanted the bmw blue (bright) and on the final product, you could still see spots of dark red showing through. My guess is it could've been the person who painted his car, but I was told he was a pro!
With my experience (im not a pro painter), it takes more coats of color to cover the older if you dont sand down to metal or primer before spraying the new...

i would suggest the 2 stage painting..base-clear. dig?
we have done both, but the 2 stage gives much better results, and you can give your car a pearl effect if you wish.

it really depens on your budget a base coat clear coat is by far a better paint job but a single stage urathan can look very good as long as you get a "simple" color(no pearls, flakes,or metalics) the b/c will be shinnier and hold up better to the weather but there is nothing wrong with a singal stage if you take car of it

the reason your friends old paint shows threw isn't because a lack of coats its most licly because some cheat a## painter didn't spray a coat of sealer before he panted it

base coat and clear all the way mate. i am a painter, and if you paint your car with a 2k direct gloss you will find the colour will dye out after a while, and you will constantly have to keep polishing your car to bring the colour back up. plus the fact its sooo old fashioned, nobody still uses that type of paint! whereas a base coat is protected from dying out by the clear coat, since it contains no colour the sun cannot fade the paint at all. and i doubt the price will vary much between the 2k direct gloss and base coat/ clear. i dont know where you're from, but in scotland it dont make that much difference! good luck with the job!
Thanks for all the responses. I was originally going to do just a single stage black (my car was black before) but after doing some research I found out you basically cant do anything but a solid color in single stage and have it look ok. I talked to a local paint supplier and it looks like the overall cost for a basecoat/clearcoat paintjob actually wont be as much more money as I first thought and he said I could basically pick any OEM honda color and it would cost the same ammount. Originally I was gonna drop my car off somewhere for the 400$ special, but now I think Im going to spend the money on the paint and proper supplies and just do all the work on my own. We'll see how that turns out.
