Default radiator fan issue

Toward the end of last summer, my radiator fan stopped working. I tried to figure it out and couldnt track it down. Winter came and it got cold as ***** so i didnt think about it anymore. In the spring it started warming up so i decided to change the fan sensor that is on the thermo housing. After that...nothing happened. And then just one day, they came on and started working again. Then i did my head rebuild and they do not work again. Yes, i have tested the fans...they do work.

Has anyone else had this happen?

Any input will help.

Well, id say to test the relay, it could be sticking. If you have a multimeter, when the car warms up, see if there is continuity at the switch, but it will only have continuity when it's trying to turn the fans on. If its good there, then check the relay and or the fuse. it has to be something in there if the fans are tested good. If all else fails, it might be the harness.

there are 3 sensors that tie in to the coolant system. There is one in the thermostat housing, then one in the side of the head under the dizzy(just replaced), then another one in this little housing on the front side of the head where the top radiator hose enters the head. Which of these would control the fans?

Well, I dunno about the 4th gens, but on the 5th gens, there are two switches. One is underneath the distributor. that one is the sending unit for your temp gauge. The one that controls the fans is in the thermostat cover. The relay for the two fans are in seperate places, and there is also a fuse. One relay is in the fuse box under the hood, the other is on the drivers side behind the headlight. There's a pair of relays together, the one you want is closer to the firewall. hope this helps

that is exactly what i needed to know. More than likely it is a relay going out. I bought a new fan switch sensor. The one that goes in the thermo housing. I will check the other relays though. Can i just buy a new one at a parts store or do i have to go to honda?

where is the fuse exactly? a pic of the relay locations would be awesome!

i have changed every sensor and relay. The only thing i can think of is a dead ground somewhere. If anyone can help me trace this back, please do so.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by jdmlude_dude &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">there are 3 sensors that tie in to the coolant system. When I changed my head (4th gen) I hooked the fans up to the wrong sensor, so they came on when the car turned OFF. Long story short, it plugs into the sensor on the front side of the head, in that housing w/the top radiator hose.

Are you ready to buy a voltmeter yet or are you still waiting for me to buy you one? You can check your fan grounds by running a ground wire from the fans directly to the battery. With a meter you would take the connector loose at the fans with the meter grounded at the battery and probe for 12 volts at the connector. This would not only tell you if you had a bad fan ground, but also if you were getting voltage to the fan. If not, we would move to the sensor and then to the relay until we found the bad ground or hot connection. You have spent more money on parts that were not needed than you would have spent on a meter that will allow you to avoid needless purchases for years to come.

Where can i get a good one amckee? What do i need to look for? My dad has a really expensive one and that is the reason i have avoided getting one. But i am not able to get to it anytime i want because i live an hour away from them. So i guess i will break down and buy one now! Once i get it, I want you to help me run down the problem. you seem to know a lot about it. I have my wiring diagram as well.
