What kind of car is it going into?

I know integras sometimes have problems with the screen hitting becuse it doesn't slide out far enough to clear the vents.

I like the double din because it blends better with the dash... I don't like fold outs just for that reason... They're pretty obvious when they're in use... Double DIN is lower-profile...

It is going in my 01 prelude. Yea, one good thing about the double din is that it does look better when the screen is on. If I got the fold out one, I would have to mount it in the bottom slot.

personally I like the D1. I wish pioneer would come out with a D2 that would change the setup so the CD slot is a CD/DVD, and still have the dedicated Nav slot. That, or with memory being so damn cheap, if they could stick a micro-hard drive or even a 1 GB flash memory so the "memory" mode of navigation could hold detailed data for like a 30 mile radius of where you are or something... that would be sweet. If you did it that way, pioneer could get rid of the 2nd drive all together.. you want nav? Stick it into the only slot, the unit loads a chunk of area around you into memory.. such as all of PA, or various things depending on where you are.. after its' loaded in, take out the nav disc and insert your DVD or CD. Now that would be sweet.

Its somewhat strange they don't do this. PDA nav systems do, you put in the disk load the desired amount of map into memory then your good to go. Could be that the amount of detail in a map is more with the car version, thus requiring a very large amount of memory. $40 extra dollar for memory may not sound like much but multiply it by a few thousand units and that's a lot of lost revenue. When probably most people that use Nav could care less about freeing up the drive.

u cant watch movies as u drive wit the N2.. it has a gyro in it and it senses when the car is moving..

u can use the navi tho..

theres a few ways to get around the gryo.. either get the code from pio.. which i doubt they will give u.. turn the mother boad **** upside down.. or hook up the video out to another source such as a rear view camera. ull have a lil camera box at the bottom tho..

correct me if im wrong.. i want to know if neone can watch movies wit this as they drive?

Yes, I have read about the bypass on the N2 but I thought it was impossible to mod the D1.

Also one cool thing about the N2 is that it has the built in vehicle dynamics (speed, direction, etc...), and changable backgrounds.

I am not recommending anyone do this, because if you do and something happens you could be charged with vehicular manslauter or something... but I just wanted to say the bypass "trick" for the D1 does infact work. I did it with one of the demo units. I tried to just ground the ebrake wire onto the ground wire above the black box, but sometimes a ground pulse or something on my display must have tripped the unit back into the "invalid ebrake" which I"d have to disconnect the ebrake wire re-do to fix.

For AVIC-N2, you need to remove the silver sticker underneath the main unit (not the hideaway unit).
You'll see two solder connections labeled R197. Drop a solder between them to jump them together. Then ground the parking brake wire.

Whenever you start the system up, you'll get a warning screen that says watching dvd's while driving is dangerous and your parking brake has been turned on, off, on.

as for the d1, take a look at the harness for the main head unit... there will be an empty spot next to constant (yellow) well take the orange/black wire out of the harness CAREFULLY... take that wire and reinsert it into the harness next to the yellow... hook that up to ground and your set....

be careful playing around with solder with a 2000 dolla deck..... have a local electric shop drop a couple solder joints onto it for a cheap cheap 5 dollars or so..

A car computer can have GPS, WIFI, and more for a much lower cost. Just a suggestion.

im looking to pick up the D1 for my girls car. only thing that sucks is its not detachable face . But damn it looks close to the oem navigation made for her jetta. Plus she really wants that bad, and the xm traffic tune

that unit rocks. Love playing with it.

I had both the AVIC-N2 and the AVIC-D1. Personally, the fitment of the AVIC-N2 is horrible. Exactly what B18C_EJ8 said, the screen hits the top side of the control panel, right below the air vents. The plus side to the AVIC-N2 is the detachable face, but honestly, you can get the bottom part (the part that detaches) off anywhere in LA for like $50. Besides the horrible fitment, you cant play DVD's, unless the parking brake is up. Yea its a safety issue, but still, its GHEY!! I actually had couple shops try and bypass the system, by grounding the parking brake wire. That didnt work. If you want the AVIC-N2 to play DVD's while driving, you will need to have a bypass switch, and another external DVD player connected to the AVIC-N2.

Thats when I returned the AVIC-N2 and went with the AVIC-D1. Personally I love it. It has more of a flush look, and it looks really clean. Plus, since it is a double DIN, the navagation cd is on the bottom rom, and and you can play MP3/WMAs/CDs at the same time. The AVIC-N2 does not do that, plus it doesn't play WMAs. Also with this one, you will have to add an external DVD player.

I have had my AVIC-D1 for about a month now and I absolutley love it. Right now my car is in the shop, getting the extra DVD player, but more. I decided to add in the new (slim) Playstation 2. I was told that most likely it is going to be connected where the option rear view camera would go. Hopefully that will go well.

All in all, a BIG PLUS for the AVIC-D1.

you should get a double din, they look so much better. I currently have a eclipse avn 5435, one of the best doubledin dvd/nav units, IMO.

i have a double din kenwood system in my integra. looks great and you dont have to worry about the screen folding out or not. i would get the double din in my opinion it is better to always know that the screen will be visible.

with this kenwood unit i can play dvd or cd while driving. you can also add in a navigation unit, ps2, external dvd player, cd changer or anything else you want. i believe it holds up to 2 other components besides the navigation. but by far the best thing is that i can change what screen i am watching while listing to something different. so i can play ps2 (if i had it) while listing to the cd that is in the stereo. or i can use the navigation while listing to the radio. or any other variation.
