2002 honda accord 2door 4cyl automatic 50k miles. The car only gets 20mpg around town and 23mpg on the freeway. I drive it like a granny. I have put new plugs, new distribitor cap, new air filter and checked the air presure in the tires. What else could cause this. please, help gas prices are as high as a crackhead on the 1st of the month.

 

bad 02 sensor would be my guess. If it's reading incorrectly it can cause your car to run lean/rich. In your case... rich

 

A bad o2 sensor could cause poor milage, but the computer system on the vehicle constantly tests the sensors to ensure they are operating properly. If there was a failure or fault with one of them, you would have a check engine light. I would look more towards maintenance issues. The parts you suggested are all good... but I would make sure you used OEM parts... they really are different and better. I would also have the valve adjustment checked and set to spec. Out of ajdustment valve clearance can contribute to poor fuel economy. Tire pressure can as well. 23 is def low for the 4, I have an 02 V6 and I got almost 30 on the freeway.... air on, cruise on.
