1994 or 5 engine in a 1996- check engine light coming on
Looking at a 1996accord lx with a replaced (non-vtec) f22b2 engine. Check engine light
comes on. runs fine. wondering if the shop who replaced the engine droped in a 1994 or 5 engine. How can I tell? serial #?
Resistances on some of the sensors look different in Hayne's manual for 94 and 95 v. 96. Would this trip check engine light?
I have chance to pick this car up for a good price... curr owner took it to the dealer who couldn't read the code. Said something about changing the distributor?
Any thoughts?

Try reading the code yourself. It's very quick and easy. This webpage tells you how to do it:

Thoughts?, yeh - whats the code?
Did this condition develope, or has it been this way since the engine replacement.?
If it just developed, you can forget about wrong sensors (because at one time it has been working properly)
If, on the other hand, its been on since the engine replacement; you've got your work cut out for you.
Start with the code.

it'll be a code 9(cylinder position sensor), i did this swap before. i never bothered trying to eliminate the code because i was swapping my built motor back in anyhow.
Thanks.. May buy the car tonight... This is exactly the kind of info I was looking for.
I thought it might be a sensor that didn't mate up with the ECU....
I'll let u know what I do...
Thnaks for the all the posts

Okay. Bought the car last evening. It is a 1996. Engine serial number has a "5" where there would normally be a "T". Is this a 199"5" motor?
Also, there is no plug for the TDK<CYP Sensor. COuld my 1996 accord
that was picked up by the owner on JAn 1 1996 be really using the 1995
wiring harness/distributor housed dtk/cyp sensor?? Or did the mechanic who replace the motor fool around with the wiring Harness? It sure looks stock to me...
I looked carefully at the harness where the alternator wires normally have three wires- looks like it has only two instead of the three. (alt wire, TDK<CYP connector, and some thing else.)
Drove the car home last night; ran fine. I wil check the codes on the ECU.
I really would like to know if any of the 1996 models may have 1995 electrical configurations--- you know distributor set up.....

deserthonda can probably set you straight on this one; I'm having one H...k of a time finding a vin / engine code breakdown as you discribe it.
I have found the engine stamped number pad (next to the trans sn# strap) using designators like f23a1 or f23a4 (examples) but what confuses me is where you get the '5' designator.
As I understand year designator, it has been an "alpha (Letter)" value sinse 1980 (A). 1997=V, 1996=U, 1995=T, 1994=S (your"5" maybe???)
Hope I haven't confused things furthur

Yes, That is what my 96 service manual says. I am taking the serial number from the mechanic's work order where conveniently a :5" is where the "T" should be...
.. I'll look on the engine.
Do u think the mechanic could have changed the wiring harness cause it looks like
the distributor connections are factory... I would think they would look funky ..
you know different plugs??

I think your mechanic either needs glasses, or an adult writing class.
I believe he mistook the "S" for a five (5) and wrote it such.
You are correct (however), you'll have to eyeball it to be sure

Thanks. Looks like the I probably have a 95 distributor. The 96 distributor is different.... I am thinking if I get a 96 distributor, my troubles could be over...
Dealer lists different distributor for 95 and 96. CYP sensor looks like it is in the
the distributor LX model. I have a 96 ex vtech... and the cyp sensor is at the crank. ? Any suggestions on a distributor? Bone yard? New one from Majestic is 177.00
Thanks for giving me the tip; it really seems to be making my job easier... I'll let u know for sure when I get a 95 distributor....
