DMV Planned Non-Op, anyone done it?
This is a pretty stupid question and I think I know the answer to this question but I just wanted to make sure.
I have a car that I'm not using and I wanted to register it as a Planned Non Op. I was just curious if later on I can just pay registration and drive the car? For instance, I wouldn't have to get it inspected at the CHP or anything right? I don't think so but just making sure =D TIA

I hate to add speculation to it but the guy is probably right. When you designate your car as non-op then you are exempt from having to smog your car. So, by logic, you would probably have to smog it to get it out of the non-op.

if your car has the oem motor and you have no concern over getting a bar for the engine, and if you got your recent registration and it shows no smog cert required. you can safely just have it set up as non op.(this mean that car cant be put on any public road even just to park it, has to be placed and kept on private property the whole time) and then when your ready to register it youjust pay the registeration fee and thats it.... but if you have the renewal and it says you need to have it pass smog or test only.. when you re register it you will ofcoarse have to have it smogged...
i just got my registeration on my 92 hatch.. it is only $30 bucks... and non op is $16 bucks.... i think registering it for the extra cash is worth it..
but your situation may be different.
eitherway you will be calling the dmv anyways, you'll see

well here's the thing, i got a test only smog only after 1 year of getting the car. also i swapped an SR20DET in there. either way i would have to smog it. but i just want to postpone it for now until i can find someone who can do it illegally. if i did the non-op, could i just register it again in say a year and get it smogged (illegally) and that's it?
i wouldn't need to get the car inspected at the CHP would i?

i assume you have nissan/datsun of some sort (since ive never heard anyone taking on a sr20 into a honda/acura and make it complete as of yet. lol
but that aside, yea just put it as non op (remember keep it on private property) then when you register it later, you will have to have it smogged before you register it.
yea the non op situation is nothing, its just another way for the dmv to get money for having a car. but if you keep it on non op for over 3-4 (i think) you will have a huge registeration fee.
and the only way you will have to see the chp or state is if you get pulled over, and your hood popped and the cops is not happy with what he see's. then you will be going to the state ref. and once you get that ticket, there are only two options for you.
1: make that swap match the US counter part (which i dont think you can)
2. you will have to sell that car and or junk the car, and then pay the huge fine for not appearing at the state ref. and you will have to see the judge aswell.
so as long as you can stay clear of the sirens and you dont crash into someone (illegal engine, insurance can drop you) you should be ok..
but for peace of mind call your local dmv and tell them what you want to do and say you need more time to fix your car (its broken or something) instead of the illegal smog part and they will tell you what to do.

Yes as long as your registration is current then put it on Non Op so that you wont have to pay back registration fees. all you would need is smog if its due when you register it as an operable again
