High Mileage H22a4 : Rebuilt or Replace
Hi everyone, I have a 1998 Honda Prelude Base. My engine has 158k right now. I am planning for the road ahead. I know it might last a few more thousand miles, but I need to know what I can do to ensure a longer life. Should I rebuilt it or just replace it with another USDM H22a4? Which one cost more ?
Thx for any input.

i have 165 on my 97 run it till it blows up. does it smoke or have bad compression. if not why fix something thats not broke
It has bad compress and smokes sometimes. But other than that I baby it alot. I dont hit VTEC alot. Like I said, I am planning for the obvious destiny the engine is going to.
The valvetrain on the H22's is the problem...There is alot of stress on that part of the engine...I'd say just rebuild the head with some nice cams and valve components and be done with it..Just remember to tune it good..
motor swap is cheaper. Plus you will have an engine/tranny with 130k less miles. If you rebuild the head, you still have a 165k bottom end.
Its not the valvetrain that is weak. The weakest part of the h22 is the bottom end. Specifically the ringlands.
Cheapest, easier, less time to just do the swap.

Have you tried giving it a tune-up? Try some of these, and your motor will probably feel stronger than it is now
-Valve adjustment
-Change plugs
-Change plug wires
-Change cap/rotor
-Clean injectors
-Clean EGR valve
-Clean IAC valve
-Clean intake filter
-Oil change
-Run Sea Foam
Thats about all I can think of
