slightly OT: the truth about R's or just ignnorance?
While at my local Autox today, i was telling several people about my desire to sell my WRX and get an ITR. The reason i'm selling my WRX is because i have spent almost 2k in maintence since i bought it only 6 months ago.
Everyone seemed to have the following opinion:
"Nah, you can't find ITR's around here for sale (South Carolina). And if you can, they are beat to hell and back, and won't be any more reliable than your WRX, even if it IS a honda. And if you DO get lucky enough to find one that is unmolested, they'll want 20k for it" (i can afford to spend about what my WRX is worth........roughly 15-16k).
What are your thoughts...........

I shouldn't make reference.... but there is a salvage title R for cheap on the place that auctions vehicles and other random stuff. If you have track intentions then it would be good for that.
nah i need a daily driver/weekend racer. There is a salvage title R near me. The guy offered me his caR plus 5k for my WRX and i turned it down. I'd rather get a clean caR......i've been looking for soooooo long, hopefully my time will come soon.

Well, they're wrong but I think you should do some research to find out what the cars are selling for these days. H-T, Autotrader, itrca.com, etc.

oh, believe me, i have exhausted these resources. I'm sure you know, it's really hard to find a stock caR with decent miles for a decent price. (or at least in my price range).
It seems to me like you want someone to hand you the keys to a pristine ITR for less then the fair value, that is close to you. Yeahhh that's going to happen...
Sometimes you will find a $11k ITR with a clean title, but once you start looking into it you will see things that should have been replaced and were not, abused, shady items, mistreated and many other things.
If you want a clean R with low miles then your going to come up with the money or shut up.
In other words are you buying or crying?

Well, with around 15k to spend, i think that i SHOULD be able to find a decent R with decent mileage........doesn't have to be pristine.

$15K will buy you a higher mileage ITR in good condition, or a moderate mileage ITR that has been beat to crap. For $17K you can buy a moderate mileage '97-98 in good condition. For $18-19K you can buy a moderate mileage '00-01 in good condition.
The comments they made sound like pure ignorance...

my friend said the same sort of thing, he said they are all salvage by now, but around here, you can still find some non salvage ones

Most people at autoX's are opinionated a$$holes! Those are the people that don't know anything except what they read in the latest Motor Trend. Even if you buy an R that is well used, it is still a Honda. As long as the engine isn't smoking more than Cheech and Chong and some *** hasn't ran it out of oil, it should be a solid car! I guarantee that a well driven R with 70,000 miles on it will take up less maintenance $$ than a well driven WRX with 40,000 miles!!!! Don't get me wrong WRX's are nice, but hey and R is an R!!!

Data point - I sold my 2000 ITR with 76k miles for just under $16k - and it had lots of maintenance work done before the sale, it was a very solid car.

Whoops lol. Well he shouldn't have too hard of a time finding a well maintained R for around 15k.

Unfortunately, you couldn't be more wrong. When i search autotrader for example within 300 miles of my zip code, out of all the integras that come up, there are 2 R's. One salvage title, (which i don't want), and another with like 110k miles.
Anything i ever find is usually in Florida somewhere and has all kinds of "stories" associated with it..........ie new motor because of X or Y. Has been wrecked 4 times and is 4 different shades of white......etc.
The reson i got the WRX to begin with is because i had sold my GSR for 3 months and couldn't find any R's, and i needed a car.

Hey mines in FL, no such damages, and it can be had for 17k but you already knew that.

I live in SC, ITR's are very rare around here. Where in SC are you located? Lee in Columbia is selling his 01 PY with a turbo kit for $15k. You'd have a much better bet finding one in Charlotte or Atlanta. I think that Jasmadosa is selling his 01 ITR now that he has about a 97. Good luck.

Look further, and just book a flight and go get it.

There's really too much demand for them, waaay overpriced. I should have bought one when I could buy one new back in the day. Man that would have been smart. My dumbass buys a Prelude. They were overpriced when new though as well, found it hard to find a dealer with one nevermind, talking the dealer down on price.
Why is the maintenance so expensive? 4WD... turbo engine?
RSX's and EP3's are really nice newer cars, but beating all this is a really nice CRX with a B18C5 in it. Sorry for diverging.

If someone is looking for an R to track who cares about mileage. The money you save due to the miles can be put right back into the motor to get it track ready. Even if you need it to be a DD, just take the time to replace the belts, water pump, plugs, dizzy, blah blah... then the car will be like new again. I'd rather buy a 13K ITR and put 3K into freshening it up vs buying a 18K ITR with 60-80K. just my .02
But whatever you do learn from some recent posts here and make sure the #'s match the parts on the car. Don't buy a parts bin ITR.

fwiw, I've purchased a new itr and two used ones:
new: msrp and never had a problem in the time owned. tracked, autoxed, mountain runned, etc...
used: purchased at 35k miles for $16k, never a problem through lapping days, autox, daily driver since purchased, my gf daily drove it for 6 months, etc... still going strong with turbo now.
used: gf's itr purchased with a blown motor and supercharger for $12k, rebuilt the motor and it's been going strong ever since.
itr>wrx (IMHO)
