Default d-series tranny question.

ok i just got a new car (95 ej1) its the d16z6 and the only mods are 2.5 inch piping and a es oval muffler. i am planning on going turbo very soon. but my problem is my tranny, for one it grinds third gear so that gives me reason to replace it and what i want to know is whats the best d-series tranny i should use, i want something geard more for acceleration. cuz it seems like after 3rd gear it doesnt pull at all you know. so whats the best tranny swap i should consider?

I've seen them go from $50-200.. depends on condition and what the seller thinks it's worth. Check out what's available on ebay to get a rough idea.

Oh and here is the poll of people who have noticed a difference with the syncro mesh. And it also labels different types.https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=677571

When you get the tranny you should break it open and replace the input shaft bearing. D-series are notorious for that bearing going out. It happened to me twice.

Define the grind.........

all the time or under hard driving?
above 3500 rpm?

Engine mounts and crappy shift bushings are the first cause, then a 1-2 broken shifter fork.

For boost/juiced the gearing in the EX/Si tranny is perfect.

not for boost or juice.........

fitting a .9375 CRX 4th would help, but the hybrid tranny is too close for higher powered cars.

My little 145 chp/121 whp D15Beast7 loves it though.

Have you checked your clutch hydraulics for leakage?

Not true, seen it many times. Third may have( and commonly does) it's own issues. However, if the hydraulics are just starting to leak then they progressively lose pressure in the quick 1-3 shifting process making the first grind happen there. Will third probably go out if this is the case later, yes. But he needs to do this simple check regardless of wether or not he gets a new tranny.

I'm talking first stages of leaks that haven't lead to perceptible pedal presure loss yet.

how is the 3-2 downshift?

sounding like broken/worn 1-2 shifter fork, quite common.

OT but I'm interested...have you actually had one break? Mine were worn very badly on my first re-build but I hadn't come across one in the shop snapped yet.

Back on topic...are you getting any noise from the tranny at idle. Another grind issue that I see before synchros are from shot input shaft bearings. If you can't tell I'm decidedly NOT on the Syncromesh bandwagon at all and try to rule out everything else.

I hope that wasn't directed at me. There is nothing on his entire car I couldn't fix, it's what I do 12 hours a day. What's wrong with me asking for more details? Hard to be useful until you have the info.
