Tranny problems, acting up..need opions/advice...help!!!!
well I have a 94 GSR with a 2000 USDM type R tranny is why im posting this here, but a coulpe of weeks ago the tranny started acting up now its getting bad heres my problems..
1)grinding from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd...but quits after car is drove for like an hour or more and warm..
2) sometimes it wont let me downshift into 2nd from 3rd it wont go in at all..again this happens sometimes but not all the time..
3)the other day i was backing outa autozone and it wouldnt let me OUT of reverse..
i had the tranny serviced and had royal purple max gear tranny fluid put in, they said that there was shavings in the oil but nothing more than usual for a 5-speed, the tranny runs a little smoother now but those problems are still there...i priced a new full syncro set for like 700-800$$ thats crazy after labor i mite as well buy a new tranny..any advice or input would help im not sure what the problem is my clutch seems to be fine not slipping at all, or if know where to get cheap tranny parts let me know...thanks

Syncros cost me 275 shipped from gearspeed
I say it's both your clutch and syncros and maybe you should go back to Honda's MTF

ok give me direction to that gearspeed place please and honda MTF?
is it gear-speed.com i just found it if so

http://www.gear-speed.com and any Honda or Acura dealer. Don't pay more then $6.oo per bottle, you will need 2.3
ok and if i need to replace the syncros to fix the problems what all do i have to buy, just 2nd 3rd syncro's or a set or buy them for each gear or how does that work, and what about my problems makes you think about my clutch, i guess the disk could not be bad but maybe the pressure plate?
If the tranny will be open why not replace all?
Plenty of people here have had engagement issues with the clutch when it nears the end of it's life.

But you should still replace the hub, not just the brass synchro rings. I'd order the OEM 'kit' that comes with everything you need.

you possibly can get away with just the synchro rings... dependent upon the wear of the steel cones on the synchro hubs. hub sets from honda are not cost friendly however... blows.

Well, assembling everything and still getting a grind and have to tear it down again isnt time or patience friendly.

I would check and troubleshoot the shift linkage as well. Iyou can't get it out of reverse.? hmmmm
Did those problems happen all at once?

You might be Ok with just the synchros, but you might need to do more. Checkout the clutch while the trans is off and def use Honda MTF when it goes back together.
I have plenty of time and little money... It almost worked out for me when Will and I opened my tranny.
I needed the syncros, but the wear of the steel cones were ok. The problem was I needed to replace the shifter forks, all three. And getting those on very very very short notice is a bitch. So to this day it still has horrible condition shifter forks
Some times things work out and some times they don't.

you guys keep saying to use the honda manual tranny fluid instead of the royal purple, whats wrong with the royal purple tranny fluid, i mean they make it for a living so they have to know what they are doing, everyone ive talked to said that its great on high performance engines...
I dont have a prob with the Honda stuff, I've tried others and still have a better outcome with Honda.
A grinding 2nd and 3rd, sometimes wont downshift to 2nd, sometimes wont come out of reverse....... We'll cross that bridge when it comes

and that could cause all those problems????
and that could cause all those problems????
Well youre synchros will cause the grind and I'm positive thats where yours is coming from. A spring will cause the rest.
so those springs being bent out would cause enagement issues and the synchros would be the grinding....
so basiclly its all speculation until my tuner takes it down...

The engagement issues you will have to wait and see. I'll tell you for sure that youre synchros will have to be replaced.
update on my problem...at first we ruled its the clutch then no clutch is good its syncros, but the weirdest thing is that the problems are consistant at all..if im now 2nds not really grinding and 3rd is, BUT if i shift slow and shake the shifter sometimes it wont grind sometimes it will???? and im having no problems with reverse now... a coulpe of my friends told me that the spring and plates that are on the clutch disk itself , if those get bent out then they could cause problems like this..so does anyone think that my syncros are an issue or just something in the clutch unit...its going to a shop on monday just trying to trouble shoot and learn..
