Troubles with putting an automatic ECU in a manual car?
Hi,
I just purchased a manual '92 hatchback civic. Problem is, it had check engine light on, but the guy told me it didn't matter because everything was working correctly. I bought it, and shortly after I managed to pull the CEL code out of the ECU.
I checked on the ECU thread and I received code 19 which is "Automatic transmission lockup control valve". I was shocked since I own a manual car. I shortly discovered after that the guy put a automatic ECU in a manual car.
So my question is, what happens if I leave the ECU as is, in the car? Do you recommend me to buy another one or reprogram the current one ? What's your opinion on this?
Thanks for your help greatly appreciated :-)

There is nothing wrong with having an automatic ECU. You may throw a few automatic CEL's, but that's it, nothing that will adversely affect your performance.

exactly. Only problem might be with smog tests, if applicable

Did an auto to manual conversion in my last EJ and was just too cheap to get a manual ECU, worked fine (except for annoying AUTO CEL) up until the car got smashed, no downgrade in performance or anything of that nature..

yeah nothing wrong with it depending on the motor you have as well you might have a shorter cut off on the auto ecu ....

Thanks a lot guys for all your replies. I will leave it as it is right now, I have other more important things to invest my money on for the moment on my car, if I want to go through the winter!
Thanks again!
