Default $4500 for 80WHP. Is it worth it?

My Prelude at this moment is pretty much stock. Most of my money was blown on the suspension and wheel work. However for my next upgrade, I am looking forward to some power. Keeping in mind, this is my daily driver and I'd want to keep it street legal. More importantly, I want to keep it VISUALLY street legal while adding as much power as I can. I don't mind having to hit up an underground smog station but I don't want to be sent to the state referee and have to remove all my stuff just to be able to drive it again.
So far I've found the AEM V2 Intake, DC 4-2-1 headers, Greddy DOT approved Catback Exhaust, and a Jackson SuperCharger. All that is claimed by Jackson racing to still pass smog. I was interested in other things and was wondering if they would pass smog.

Port Polished Head?

Valve, valve springs, & Retainers?

V-Tec Controller?

Fuel Injectors? (While keeping the same fuel ratio)

Intake Manifold?

Throttle Body?

Put a greddy turbo kit. Strictly bolt on. And it's clean. Kit goes for a little less than $3000. Then get it tuned. The kit is safe for a stock motor as well....

You can get the Greddy kit for under $3k, but that doesn't include intercooler or a blow off valve. The Prelude kit comes with the 'blue box', not an E-manage. There is NOTHING to tune, and there is NO provision to pull timing during boost. Even with an intercooler, I have seen the kit detonate in the midrange while on a dyno. It's a decent beginners kit for those that only want a street setup and manageable power numbers, with gobs of torque in the low end. However, it is incomplete and does require additional investment.

What sort of fuel management would you want to get with that kit? Piggyback or full on?

the shop I go to put a greddy kit on a new rx8 the P.O.S. made 220whp, how pathetic is that. The kit is more or less garbage, it was hard to tune and the tech support was " install the kit and basemaps provided and go diving" not exactly. I strongly recommend you stay far from such a kit. If you want to buy garbage just to throw away when you upgrade... go on ebay and buy a "tsunami"kit, 700 with intercooler but it doesn't come with the dilusions of having a fast car. Just my .02

If you are going turbo, do it right the first time. It will cost you, but it will be reliable and make lots of power. No sense going with a mickey mouse turbo to make 200whp when you can get that NA with type S pistons and bolt ons.

I looked on Greddy's website. Their CARB legal turbo kit is for Non-SH only. Unfortunately I have an SH.

I would go for a turbo kit, forged internals, a better clutch, additional injectors and a piggy back unit, or instead, a stand alone EMS

Turbo wil give more bang for the buck I would think...although I didn't know you can get one installed for $3000....or maybe that was just for the kit w/ no installation?

4500 bucks for 80 hp is a little under 60 dollars per horsepower...that's not bad at all!

Okay, now he's lookin at about 10g's. What about a revhard/DRAG kit with uberdata, now hes looking at about 3500 or so to have a solid and reliable car. 2500-3000 for an intercooled kit, 200 for p72 with harness, and a few hundred for tuning. Now you can controll fuel, timing, boost, and run very safe if properly tunned, and also beat the ish outta most cars.

Yeah, that all sounds great, unfortunately this is my daily driver for I'm going for something that's going to pass the state referee exam. Basicly... if it's not CARB legal and visible, I don't want to put it in my car unless I can paint it to look factory. Kinda difficult huh?

4500 is a lot for that little amount of gain ...... but if all you want to do is keep your car street legal then it's really your only option. Unfortunately Honda's aren't cheap to hook up. So either way you go about it you're going to be putting a lot of money into it. If it were me I'd save up another 6 or so grand and wait it out so I can get a few hundred whp instead of just 80whp, no fun in dropping 4500 into a car to keep it street legal when everyone else is blowing past you.

It's not about what other people are doing, it's about doing it for yourself.
