6th Gen Coupe Rear Dash Removal Instructions
I've seen alot about this, but no real step by step on how to do it. I came across a TSB about rear deck noise on http://www.jdmfan.com and it had some good diagrams on removing the rear deck, but instead of silencing noise, we'll be installing better rear speakers..
1. Prepare for battle...First off you need time, this will take awhile especially if it's your first time. You'll also need some needle nose pliers, a philips head screw driver, some mechanics gloves, a 12mm socket, and a pair of vise grips or adj. pliers.
2. Start off opening the trunk and looking for 6 white plastic rivets poking through the metal, these are what's holding the plastic dash down. Two of them are only accesible through holes int he steel. Squeeze these and push the through, they wont go far, but just get them in there.
3. Now flip down your rear seats and remove the plastic pop rivets attatching the side panels to the rear of the car. Theres 4... one in each corner.
4. Now for a decision...you can completely remove your rear seat, front seat belts, and remove the side panels completely. This is less frustrating and a bit less work than trying to do it without removing them. The only advantage to keeping them on is there less nuts, bolts and washers to looses track of.
5. I chose to leave my sides on, so the rest of the instructions will be as such, but there's few differences. Anyway, now pop off the plastic covers on those 3 LATCH teathers. Theres a 12mm bolt under there that will need to be removed. The middle one is easy, but the rear two require some careful work with some vise grips as they are too close to the rear glass to fit a socket and ratchet in there. Be carefull not to scratch the tint.
4. Now for the fun part. Grab your side panels and pull the top out. Then grab the back and push forward pulling the front lip off the ledge at the back of each door. This should allow the entire top of the side bolster to move forward a few inches. Then pull out on the back top of the side bolster and at the same time push back and up on the rear deck. When you get it close, close your eyes and whack down on the side bolster. Open your eyes and hopefully the rear dash should be above the side bolster. Repeat on other side.
6. Now slip the seat bealt out of the retainer on the rear deck and lift the rear deck up and off. This takes a little elbow grease, especially if you didnt get those white rivets through all the way.
7. Now use your tools and take out those lame 6x9's and put in some good ones!
If you can't visualize what I'm talking about head over to http://www.jdmfan.com and go in the information section. Theres some TSB's at the bottom. Check out the one about rear deck noise. Good luck!
PS..If you have a civic website, please feel free to post this there without my permission.
